When eight-year-old Joe Griffin first encountered seven abandoned ducklings, he had no idea they would become such a big part of his life. The ducklings, left alone after their mother flew away, found a new guardian in Joe, who quickly took it upon himself to care for them. What started as a simple act of kindness has turned into an extraordinary relationship that follows Joe everywhere, even to school.

Joe and his mother, Kristina Griffin, 43, created a safe space for the ducklings by building a pen and a pool in their garden. They fed them and watched as they grew stronger over the months. Their initial plan was to release the birds into a nearby quarry once they were ready to fly. But what they didn’t expect was the deep bond that formed between Joe and the ducklings.

The ducklings became so attached to Joe that they would return to his garden every morning, pecking at the window to see if he was there. This attachment extended beyond the home, as the ducklings began following Joe to his school on the island of Guernsey. Kristina described how the ducks would find him wherever he went, even when he was outside playing or visiting the quarry.

“We don’t know how they found him,” she said. “They’d always just been in our garden or the quarry. One day, I drove Joe to school, and I think the ducks must have been flying around looking for him. They landed in the playground and waddled up to his classroom window.”

The arrival of the ducklings at school caused some excitement among students and staff. According to Kristina, the ducks caused “a bit of a nuisance” as they wandered down the school corridor. Teachers tried to shoo them out, but three ducklings ended up hiding in the staff toilet. When Kristina and Joe arrived to retrieve them, the ducks refused to leave, staying in the school for the rest of the afternoon.

The story of the ducklings began when a woman who knew Joe’s father had ducks stuck in her garden. Unable to get help from the local animal shelter, the Griffin family stepped in, offering to care for the birds. At just two days old, the ducklings were too young to be released into the wild, so they stayed in the Griffin’s living room for three weeks.

Joe remembers the tiny ducklings as being so small they could fit in one hand. He fed them porridge, scrambled eggs, and fruits, and even gave each of them names. Some of the names were inspired by royalty, like Elizabeth, whom Joe called “classy” because of her elegant swimming style.

Despite being in the quarry, the ducklings still visit Joe every morning to be fed. If he isn’t there early enough, they come to the garden and peck at the door. For Joe, the ducklings are more than just animals—they are his children.

“I’m hoping to keep feeding them and their own ducklings,” he said. His mother added that Joe has always had a love for animals, having cared for frogs and butterflies in the past.
