He suggested that by 2029, the industry could be on the brink of a rebound, but it won’t be until 2030 that global box office revenues might return to pre-pandemic levels. The catch? In 2023, there were 777 million admissions, and this number dropped slightly to 734 million in 2024 due to strikes by the Writers Guild of America (WGA) and Screen Actors Guild (SAG). By 2025, projections suggest an increase to 778 million admissions, growing to 823 million by 2029. Still, this is far below the 1.3 billion tickets sold in 2019, marking a roughly 37% decline in overall attendance.

Spiegel emphasized that industry revenues are driven by the combination of price and volume. While ticket prices are rising, the number of attendees is not expected to return to pre-pandemic levels. This trend is fueled by factors such as enhanced infrastructure, technological advancements, and increasing production costs.

Globally, the outlook remains challenging. The global box office is projected to reach $33.5 billion this year, climbing to $37.7 billion by 2029. However, this still falls short of the $39.4 billion achieved in 2019. To put this into perspective, Netflix alone generated $37.5 billion in revenue in 2024, highlighting the widening gap between streaming services and traditional box office earnings.

Challenges Facing Theaters and Studios

AMC, for instance, has attempted to reverse this trend due to customer backlash. Meanwhile, Sony Pictures chairman Tom Rothman has advocated for lower ticket prices to boost attendance, though this approach has yet to gain widespread support.
