Companies Affected by the Tragedy Extend Support to Employees

Following a tragic shooting at 345 Park Avenue in New York City, which claimed the lives of four individuals, including NYPD officer Didarul Islam, several companies located in the building have taken steps to support their employees. Blackstone, a private equity firm, announced the death of one of its colleagues, Wesley LePatner, in a message to employees. The company expressed deep sorrow over the loss of LePatner, who was described as a beloved member of the team. She served as Global Head of Core+ Real Estate and CEO of Blackstone Real Estate Income Trust (BREIT). LePatner was fatally shot as she was leaving the building after 6 p.m. ET by Shane Tamura, who entered the building with an M4 assault rifle.

Tamura had traveled from Nevada to New York City via New Jersey on Monday. Authorities have disclosed that he had a history of mental illness. His motive for the attack remains under investigation.

Rudin Management, the company that owns 345 Park Avenue, also lost a young worker during the incident. According to Mayor Eric Adams, Tamura mistakenly went to the 33rd floor. In a statement, Rudin Management expressed devastation over the tragedy and extended condolences to those affected, including a police officer, a security guard, and an employee of a tenant firm. The company emphasized the importance of unity and support during this difficult time.

The NFL, which operates out of the third floor of the building, issued a memo to employees following the attack. Commissioner Roger Goodell informed staff that one employee was seriously injured and hospitalized. He also noted that all other employees were accounted for and safe. The NFL provided resources for grief counseling and encouraged employees based in New York to work remotely or take the day off. An increased security presence is expected in the coming days.

KPMG, another company with offices in the building, confirmed that its office at 345 Park Avenue is closed and offered flexibility for employees to work from home. The company’s CEO, Tim Walsh, and deputy chair, Atif Zaim, shared condolences on LinkedIn, expressing support for the victims and their families. They praised the bravery of building security and law enforcement during the crisis.

Shane Tamura, who was identified as a high school football player from California, reportedly suffered from chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) and left a suicide note in the building. This information was shared by Mayor Adams and other reports.

A heavy police presence continues to be seen in Midtown outside the building as authorities conduct their investigations. The event has raised concerns about safety and mental health in the workplace, prompting companies to reassess their protocols and support systems for employees.
