Billy Napier Believes in DJ Lagway's Growth and Resilience After Injuries

DJ Lagway’s Health Challenges and the Gators’ Plan for a Stronger Season
As the Florida Gators prepare for their fall camp, one of the most pressing concerns is the health of quarterback DJ Lagway. The sophomore signal-caller has been dealing with another injury, adding to a history of physical setbacks that have impacted his development over the past year. Despite these challenges, head coach Billy Napier remains confident in Lagway's ability to be ready when he steps onto the field this season.
Lagway has faced multiple injuries throughout his college career, including a shoulder issue during the spring and a recent calf problem. These setbacks have forced him to miss portions of practice, which is crucial for any player, especially a young quarterback. However, Napier emphasized that Lagway’s attitude and work ethic have been positive factors in his recovery process.
“I think, look. Injuries are one of the tougher things about the profession,” said Napier during a press conference. “And certainly for him, being a year-two player, and a really motivated and hungry guy, you know…You know, he’s still a very young player, needs these reps for development as well.”
Napier acknowledged that it’s not ideal for Lagway to be sidelined, but he believes the quarterback is handling the situation well. The coach also highlighted the importance of Lagway staying connected with the team, even when he can’t be on the field full-time.
“He has done a good job staying connected,” Napier said. “You know, I think he still has a voice as a leader. He’s still walking the halls. He’s still able to be a factor in that regard.”
To support Lagway’s development, the coaching staff has taken a creative approach to his training. This includes using various methods to keep him engaged and involved in the program, even when he’s not physically participating in practices. Assistant coach Coach O’Hara has played a key role in developing these strategies.
“We do a ton of things in our offseason program,” Napier explained. “And, certainly, OTAs this summer? You know, he was able to take a million reps. We do some of that without a ball, some with a ball.”
These efforts aim to ensure that Lagway remains mentally and physically prepared for the upcoming season. Napier stressed the importance of managing expectations and focusing on daily progress rather than rushing into action.
“He’s in year two. He, I think, understands what’s required to be ready,” Napier said. “It’s not ideal but I think, ultimately, you know, we’ll come up with the best plan we can to have him ready.”
The Gators are taking a cautious approach to Lagway’s recovery, ensuring that he gets the necessary rest and treatment before returning to full competition. With the season just a month away, the team is working closely with Lagway to make sure he’s in the best possible condition when he takes the field.
Napier remains optimistic about Lagway’s future, believing that the quarterback will be able to overcome these challenges and contribute significantly to the team’s success. The focus now is on maintaining a balanced approach that prioritizes both his health and his development as a player.
As the Gators move forward, the coaching staff will continue to adapt their strategies to support Lagway’s growth. Their goal is to ensure that he’s not only physically ready but also mentally prepared to lead the team this season. With the right mindset and support, Lagway has the potential to become a key player for Florida in the coming months.
