Beto O'Rourke's Nonprofit Accused of Funding Dems' Texas Escape

Texas Attorney General Launches Investigation into Beto O'Rourke's Nonprofit
Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton has announced an investigation into the activities of Beto O'Rourke’s nonprofit organization, Powered by People. The probe comes after reports suggested that the group may have been funding efforts to support Texas House Democrats who fled the state to block Republican redistricting initiatives.
The exodus of Democratic lawmakers from Texas was a strategic move to prevent Republicans from redrawing congressional maps. This action led to the authorization of civil arrest warrants for the absent lawmakers, as they were seen as depriving the House chamber of its ability to conduct official business. Governor Greg Abbott later called on the Texas Department of Public Safety to assist in their arrest, though the warrants are only enforceable within the state, raising questions about their execution.
Amid the political turmoil, a report from The Texas Tribune claimed that Powered by People was among the main groups providing financial support to the fleeing lawmakers. The report cited anonymous sources involved in fundraising efforts and indicated that the nonprofit was covering air travel, lodging, and logistical costs, as well as paying $500 per day in fines for the absent legislators.
Paxton stated that the financial assistance provided by Powered by People could potentially violate Texas bribery laws and other regulations related to campaign finance, coercion of public servants, and abuse of office. He emphasized that the state would not tolerate any attempts to buy influence or interfere with legislative duties.
In response to the investigation, O'Rourke criticized the actions of Texas Republicans, calling them "thugs" trying to "steal our country." He also accused Paxton of hypocrisy, noting that the attorney general had previously been acquitted of impeachment charges related to corruption and bribery.
O'Rourke defended his actions, stating that the efforts to stop the redistricting were crucial to preventing what he described as an authoritarian power grab. He encouraged supporters to text "FIGHT" to 20377 to show solidarity with the cause.
Powered by People has been actively seeking donations on its website, promising that 100% of contributions will go toward supporting Texas Democrats in their fight against what they see as a threat to democratic processes. The nonprofit has a history of aiding Democratic efforts, including a 2021 initiative where it reportedly raised $600,000 to help Texas House Democrats remain in Washington, D.C., to obstruct Republican legislative reforms.
During a CNN interview, O'Rourke was asked about his role in helping Democrats flee Texas. When questioned about whether the funds might be better spent aiding vulnerable Texans, he argued that the effort was necessary to prevent the consolidation of authoritarian power in America. O'Rourke maintained that the lawmakers could stay out long enough to stop what he described as a "steal" in Texas.
The ongoing conflict highlights the deepening divide between political factions in Texas and raises important questions about the role of nonprofits in influencing legislative outcomes. As the investigation continues, the situation remains a focal point of national attention, with implications for the future of Texas politics and the broader American political landscape.
