Bend It Like Beckham Sequel Coming 20 Years Later

The Return of a Beloved Classic
Gurinder Chadha, the acclaimed filmmaker behind the 2003 soccer film Bend It Like Beckham, has confirmed that she is currently working on a sequel to the beloved movie. This news has sparked excitement among fans who have long hoped for a return to the world of Jess Bhamra and her friends.
Chadha shared her enthusiasm with Deadline, expressing her desire to revisit the original characters and build upon the legacy they helped create for women's football. "I'm excited to revisit the original characters and revive the enduring story and build on the legacy we helped to create for the women's game," she said. She added that the original cast members, including Parminder Nagra, Keira Knightley, Archie Panjabi, and Juliet Stevenson, are aware of the project but are waiting to see a script before committing.
"I'm pretty certain that everyone's going to want to come back," Chadha said. "Everything hinges on the script and if the original cast likes it. I am working really hard to make sure every character I bring back has a decent arc and scenes."
A New Chapter in the Story
Chadha co-wrote the original 2003 film with Guljit Bindra and her husband Paul Mayeda Berges. For the sequel, she plans to collaborate once again with her husband, who contributed some of the film’s most memorable lines. "I'm hoping to write it with Paul, who has come up with some very funny lines like he did last time," she told Deadline.
The director has been considering a sequel or a follow-up TV series for many years. However, she felt it was important to wait until she had a compelling story to tell. "I didn't want to do anything because I didn't have a story," Chadha said. "And then I came up with a great story, really super-cool story. So now I'm inspired. Literally came up with it just about a month ago."
A Vision for the Future
Chadha aims to release the sequel by 2027, which would mark the 25th anniversary of the original film’s U.K. premiere. She has also drawn inspiration from her recent friendship with Emma Hayes, head coach of the U.S. women's national soccer team. "Her insights into the world of football at her level are invaluable," Chadha noted.
She emphasized how much the landscape of women's football has changed since the original film was released. "Women's football is more competitive, more exciting, and more global than ever," she said. "It is an honor for me to be a small part of it."
Relevance and Impact
Chadha reflected on the message of the original film, which centered around empowering girls and challenging societal expectations. "The film was about lifting up girls and saying, ‘You can do and you can be anything you want even though society dictates what you can and can't do,' and that message is still relevant today," she said.
She added that the film played a role in building the legacy of women's soccer. "The film's been part of that legacy, and I feel there's more that I can do. So that's what I'm writing and that's what I'm focusing on. It will be hard-hitting, of course, but it will also be incredibly joyous. Let's hope we can bring back that same joy and feel good about putting women and girls on the map like we did 23 years ago."
Looking Ahead
With a clear vision and a strong connection to the original story, Chadha is determined to deliver a sequel that honors the past while embracing the future. Fans are eagerly awaiting the next chapter in the journey of Jess Bhamra and her friends.
