Barcelona, Tottenham, Newcastle Head to South Korea for Preseason Games

European Football Clubs Make a Splash in South Korea
South Korean football fans are in for an exciting summer as three of Europe’s top clubs make their way to the country for preseason matches. These games not only offer a chance to see world-class talent up close but also provide a glimpse into the growing global appeal of European football.
Starting this week, the action kicks off with Newcastle United, the reigning English Football League Cup champions, taking on the Team K League All-Stars at Suwon World Cup Stadium. The match is scheduled for 8 p.m. on Wednesday and is part of the annual Coupang Play Series. This series, organized by the South Korean online streaming platform Coupang, brings European clubs to South Korea for preseason action every summer. It's a unique opportunity for fans to witness top-tier teams in a more intimate setting.
Newcastle will follow up with another match against Tottenham Hotspur, the 2024-2025 UEFA Europa League champions, on Sunday at Seoul World Cup Stadium. This game will be especially significant for fans of Son Heung-min, the South Korean superstar who leads the Spurs. With his contract set to expire soon, this could be one of the last chances for local supporters to see him in a Spurs jersey on home soil.
Between these two matches, FC Barcelona will make a historic return to South Korea after 15 years. The Spanish giants will face FC Seoul of the K League 1 at Seoul World Cup Stadium on Thursday, followed by a game against Daegu FC on Monday. Barcelona's visit is highly anticipated, as it brings together some of the most iconic names in football history.
Barcelona's squad includes Lamine Yamal, the teen sensation who has taken over the iconic No. 10 jersey previously worn by Lionel Messi. Raphinha, the 2024-2025 La Liga Player of the Season, and Robert Lewandowski, who scored 27 goals at age 36 last season, will also be on the tour. Additionally, former Manchester United star Marcus Rashford, recently loaned to Barcelona, may face his former teammate Jesse Lingard, who now plays for FC Seoul.
The trip to South Korea wasn't without its challenges. Earlier in the week, Barcelona had to suspend a match in Japan due to contractual issues with a promoter. However, the situation was resolved at the last minute, ensuring that both of their preseason matches in South Korea would go ahead as planned.
Tottenham Hotspur’s Asian tour also includes a game against Arsenal in Hong Kong on Thursday. The Spurs squad will feature Yang Min-hyeok, a 19-year-old South Korean forward who signed with the club last summer but was loaned to Queens Park Rangers before making his senior debut for Spurs.
Newcastle United will be missing their top scorer from last season, Alexander Isak, who is ruled out due to a minor thigh injury. Isak, who finished second in the Premier League with 23 goals, has been linked with a move to Liverpool. Despite this, the team remains focused on the upcoming matches and the opportunities they present.
As the summer continues, South Korea is set to become a hub for European football, with fans eagerly awaiting the chance to see their favorite teams and players in action. Whether it's the excitement of a Premier League clash or the legacy of a Spanish giant, these matches promise to be unforgettable experiences for all involved.
