A Tragic Cold Case Finally Comes to a Close

After four years, the cold-case killing of a man found shot inside the trunk of a burning car has finally resulted in arrests. The case, which left the victim's family searching for answers and closure, has now taken a significant step forward with the apprehension of two individuals linked to the crime.

The incident occurred on November 9, 2021, when first responders discovered a 2011 Chrysler Sedan on fire in an east-side neighborhood of Indianapolis. Inside the burning vehicle, officers found Ail Smith Jr., 47, who had been shot in the head. The Marion County Coroner’s Office confirmed that the cause of death was a gunshot wound to the head. However, at the time, investigators faced limited evidence, and the case quickly went cold.

Now, two men have been arrested in connection with the killing. One individual is currently held at the Marion County Jail for assisting a criminal, while another, already in federal custody for unrelated charges, is accused of the actual killing. The arrests mark a major breakthrough in the case and offer some sense of justice for the victim’s family.

A Life Cut Short

Ail Smith Jr. was described by his father, Ail Smith Sr., as a hardworking and devoted family man. He was married and the father of four children. Ail Jr. had earned a bachelor’s degree in business management and an MBA, and he worked for several notable organizations, including AT&T, IndyGo, the Indianapolis Department of Public Works, and the Defense Finance and Accounting Service. Before entering the corporate world, he started his career in the family business, driving dump trucks alongside his father.

“He had to drive a stick shift, and everyone would say, ‘Man, he sure can drive that gear shift, can’t he?’” Smith Sr. recalled. “That was my baby boy. Even now, it’s just hard to know that he’s gone.”

Outside of work, Ail Jr. enjoyed fishing, biking, studying, and watching movies. He was also a proud member of the Sumner A. Furniss Masonic Lodge No. 61, holding the 32nd degree. His father described him as outgoing, cheerful, and always eager to create lasting memories with his loved ones. In the year he was killed, Ail Jr. even launched his own transport company, Ail Lee Smith Jr. Trucking Company LLC/T & A Transport, after quitting his job and purchasing a box truck to haul freight.

The Night of the Tragedy

The night of the incident, Smith Jr. was found in the trunk of a burning car. According to Smith Sr., the vehicle didn’t burn completely, but the body was discovered 32 blocks from where Ail Jr. lived. The location of the car raised many questions for the family, especially since they couldn’t understand why their son would end up in such a situation.

Over the years, detectives conducted numerous interviews and executed multiple search warrants, but the case remained unsolved. It wasn't until recently that new information emerged, leading to the arrest of two individuals. One witness claimed to have seen the crime take place, providing critical details that helped investigators move forward.

A Long Wait for Justice

For the Smith family, the long wait for answers was emotionally draining. Smith Sr. shared that one of his grandchildren followed the case closely, hoping for updates. But as time passed, it became increasingly difficult to believe the case would ever be resolved.

Despite the years that have passed, the Unsolved Homicide Unit of the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department (IMPD) remained committed to finding justice for the victim and his family. Chief Chris Bailey praised the efforts of the detectives, stating that their determination led to the recent arrests. He emphasized that IMPD will continue to seek justice for victims, no matter how long it takes.

A Family Still Grieving

Even with the arrests, the pain of losing Ail Jr. remains deep for his family. Smith Sr. expressed his confusion about what could have led to his son’s death, saying, “What was the reason? Why did he do it?” He added that the hurt never truly goes away, and he still thinks about his son every day.

The case, which has now reached a turning point, brings some relief to the family, though the emotional scars will remain. As the legal process continues, the community and the Smith family await further developments in the case.
