Arrest of U.S. Army Soldier for Espionage and Export Violations

A U.S. Army soldier has been arrested on serious charges related to espionage and export violations after allegedly attempting to provide sensitive national defense information to a foreign government. The individual, identified as Taylor Adam Lee, is accused of trying to share classified details about the M1A2 Abrams tank in exchange for Russian citizenship.

Lee, who is 22 years old and from El Paso, Texas, was arrested on charges of espionage and export violations. He is currently an active-duty service member stationed at Fort Bliss and holds a Top Secret (TS) / Sensitive Compartmented Information (SCI) security clearance, which grants access to highly sensitive military data.

Alleged Actions Against National Security

According to court documents, Lee sought to establish his U.S. Army credentials and send U.S. defense information to Russia’s Ministry of Defense. This activity reportedly occurred between May 2025 and the present. In June 2025, Lee allegedly transmitted export-controlled technical information on the M1A2 Abrams Tank online and expressed willingness to assist the Russian Federation. He reportedly said, "The USA is not happy with me for trying to expose their weaknesses," and added, "At this point, I’d even volunteer to assist the Russian Federation when I’m there in any way."

In July, Lee met with someone he believed to be a representative of the Russian government. During this meeting, he handed over an SD card containing detailed information about the M1A2 Abrams tank and other armored fighting vehicles used by the U.S. military. Several of these documents contained controlled technical data that Lee was not authorized to disclose. Other documents were marked as Controlled Unclassified Information (CUI), featuring banner warnings and dissemination controls.

Throughout the meeting, Lee emphasized that the information on the SD card was sensitive and likely classified. He also discussed obtaining and providing a specific piece of hardware inside the M1A2 Abrams tank to the Russian government.

On July 31, 2025, Lee delivered what appeared to be the hardware to a storage unit in El Paso, Texas. After completing this action, he sent a message to the individual he believed to be a Russian representative, stating, "Mission accomplished."

Government Response to the Charges

Government officials have responded strongly to the allegations against Lee. Assistant Attorney General for National Security John A. Eisenberg stated, "According to the criminal complaint, the defendant sought to transmit sensitive national defense information to Russia regarding the operation of the M1A2 Abrams, our nation’s main battle tank." He added that the National Security Division will continue to work with law enforcement and military partners to ensure such serious transgressions are met with appropriate consequences.

FBI officials have also commented on the case. Assistant Director in Charge Steven J. Jensen of the FBI’s Washington Field Office said, "Lee allegedly violated his duty to protect the United States in favor of providing national defense information to the Russian government." He emphasized the FBI's commitment to protecting U.S. national security and bringing those who seek to undermine it to justice.

Assistant Director Roman Rozhavsky of the FBI’s Counterintelligence Division noted that Lee allegedly attempted to provide classified military information on U.S. tank vulnerabilities to a person he believed to be a Russian intelligence officer in exchange for Russian citizenship. He added that today’s arrest sends a clear message to anyone considering betraying the U.S., especially service members who have sworn to protect the homeland.

Ongoing Investigation and Next Steps

The FBI Washington and El Paso Field Offices are investigating the case, with significant assistance from the U.S. Army Counterintelligence Command. The investigation continues to uncover the full extent of Lee's actions and any potential involvement of others.

This case highlights the critical importance of safeguarding classified military information and the severe consequences for those who attempt to compromise national security. As the legal process unfolds, the focus remains on ensuring accountability and reinforcing the integrity of U.S. defense systems.
