Armed Guards and Phone Jammers: Zohran Mamdani's Opulent Uganda Wedding

A Lavish Celebration Amidst Local Controversy
Zohran Mamdani, a prominent Indian-origin mayoral candidate in New York, recently celebrated his wedding to artist and animator Rama Duwaji with an extravagant three-day event at his family's expansive estate in Uganda. The celebration took place at the Mamdani family compound located in the exclusive Buziga Hill neighborhood of Kampala. According to reports, the event was marked by high levels of security, including armed guards, phone-jamming technology, and multiple checkpoints.
Mamdani, who is 33 years old, had eloped with Duwaji, 27, in February. He shared news of his upcoming trip to Uganda on social media, mentioning that he would be joining his mother, filmmaker Mira Nair, and father, professor Mahmood Mamdani, who own the property. This upscale neighborhood is home to several wealthy individuals, including billionaire businessman Godfrey Kirumira, who has interests in real estate, tourism, and infrastructure.
Transforming the Estate into a Party Venue
The Mamdani family estate was transformed into a festive hub for the celebrations. Christmas lights adorned the trees in the garden, and music filled the air throughout the event. Luxury vehicles, including Mercedes and a Range Rover, were seen arriving at the compound.
Witnesses reported that more than 20 special forces command unit guards were stationed outside the house, some wearing masks. A phone-jamming system was also set up, emphasizing the exclusivity of the event. One gate reportedly had around nine guards present.
On Thursday, guests enjoyed music from a local DJ while sipping fruit juices, a common feature in Indian-style events. Mamdani addressed his guests later that evening, and the party concluded after midnight. On Friday, military-style tents were being dismantled as the festivities came to an end. Security personnel then took over at the gates.
The Wealth and Legacy of the Mamdani Family
The Mamdani estate spans two acres of lush gardens and offers panoramic views of Lake Victoria. Properties in this area can easily sell for over $1 million. Mamdani's parents, Mira Nair and Mahmood Mamdani, reside on the property in Uganda, where the Democrat was born. They also divide their time between New York and New Delhi.
Mamdani moved to New York at the age of seven and became a U.S. citizen in 2018. He met Duwaji through the dating app Hinge and announced their marriage earlier this year. The couple now lives in a rent-stabilized apartment in Astoria.
Local Reactions and Sensitivity Concerns
While the Mamdani family celebrated their son’s wedding, some neighbors were still grieving the recent passing of former Ugandan Supreme Court Judge George Kanyeihamba, who died on July 14. Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni visited the area to pay respects, and the street was blocked by the president's vehicles. It remains unclear if Museveni attended Mamdani’s event.
Local residents expressed concern about the timing of the celebration, calling it insensitive. In Ugandan culture, the period following a death is known as "Okukungubaga," a time for mourning. Some locals felt it was inappropriate to hold a wedding celebration during this sensitive time.
"One local stated, 'Because of the culture here, it was insensitive to have a wedding celebration in the same week as mourning...People are still in mourning.' They pointed out that Kanyeihamba's house is only a few minutes away from the Mamdani property. 'He has not even been buried, and we have his friends coming to give last words and to mourn before the burial next week, yet Mamdani is celebrating his wedding for three days.'"
However, the Mamdani property is isolated enough that some locals were unaware of the three-day wedding event. Despite the controversy, the celebration highlighted the family's wealth and the cultural significance of such events in their community.
