D-Box seats are designed to work in sync with specific movies, using internal haptics similar to those found in smartphones, video game controllers, and virtual reality headsets. These seats can produce 65,000 different nuanced haptic effects, providing a tailored experience for each film. According to Julia McCartha, a publicist for Cinemark, the company collaborates closely with movie studios and directors to choreograph the movements for each film, ensuring a synchronized and immersive experience.

A Canadian Innovation with Long-Term Partnership

D-Box, a Canadian-based company, has been partnering with Cinemark for over a decade. The first D-Box installation was in late 2013 at a theater in the Houston area. McCartha notes that Tom Cruise’s blockbuster sequel "Top Gun: Maverick" performed exceptionally well with D-Box, highlighting the effectiveness of this technology.

This summer, Cinemark brought D-Box to their Huntsville theater located at the Bridge Street Town Center. The theater has programmed several films for D-Box, including horror flicks such as "Megan 2.0" and "28 Days Later," Brad Pitt's racing saga "F1," and the dino-franchise installment "Jurassic World Rebirth." Even family-friendly movies like "Lilo & Stitch" have been enhanced by D-Box.

Enhancing the Movie-Watching Experience

McCartha emphasizes that D-Box offers a unique way to amplify the movie-watching experience, regardless of the genre. Before trying D-Box, I was skeptical. I had never been a fan of 3D goggles and believed that if a movie wasn’t well-told, additional tech was just a gimmick. However, watching "Superman" from a D-Box seat changed my perspective.

Initially, the seat's effects were a bit distracting, but after getting used to them, the experience became much more enjoyable. The D-Box seats at Cinemark's Huntsville theater are already comfortable and reclining, with a red color that distinguishes them from regular seats. They feature a controller on the right armrest, allowing users to adjust the settings between low, medium, and high or turn off the effects entirely.

The Cost and Availability of D-Box

The cost for a D-Box experience at Cinemark Huntsville is about five to six dollars extra on top of the standard ticket price. For a standard format screening, tickets range from around $13 to $9 for matinees. Each auditorium typically has two or three rows of D-Box seating, totaling 20 to 30 seats.

McCartha states that Cinemark has received positive feedback for these seats, which are now the largest footprint of D-Box among any movie theater chain. More than 425 Cinemark auditoriums across the U.S. and Latin America are equipped with D-Box, with plans to add 70 more in the next 18 months.

A Comprehensive Theater Experience

Cinemark in Huntsville offers more than just D-Box seats. Their concessions include classic items like popcorn and soda, as well as upgraded options such as sushi rolls and craft beer. The concessions line is a mini maze, where you can pick up a boxed Pizza Hut pie or movie merchandise like a $30 “Jurassic World Rebirth” popcorn promo shaped like a T. Rex head.

McCartha highlights that Cinemark aims to provide an immersive experience from the moment customers walk into the theater. While a moving seat will never replace strong storytelling, cinematography, or acting, D-Box adds an extra layer of enjoyment. Unlike 3D glasses, D-Box does not require wearing anything on your face, making it a more comfortable option for viewers.
