Amherst Police Boost Patrols as Car Thefts Soar

Rising Concerns Over Car Thefts in Amherst
Residents of Amherst are sounding the alarm as car thefts have surged dramatically throughout the town. Recent data obtained by a local news outlet reveals that the number of stolen vehicles has nearly doubled over the past five years, with a 92.5% increase since 2020. This alarming trend is causing growing concern among locals who are urging their neighbors to remain vigilant.
In 2020, Amherst reported 147 cases of car theft. By 2024, this number had risen to 283, and so far in 2025, there have already been 144 incidents reported. If this pace continues, the town could surpass last year’s total. Additionally, police reports indicate that at least seven cars have been stolen each week over the past four weeks, highlighting the urgency of the situation.
Some of these thefts have been captured on camera, providing chilling evidence of the increasing danger. Footage shared with local media shows masked and hooded individuals walking up driveways in the dead of night, checking car doors, and in some cases, driving off in stolen vehicles. These images are a stark reminder of the vulnerability that many residents feel.
Amherst resident David Morales shared one such incident on June 21, when two individuals were seen walking down his long driveway just before 3 a.m. “It's pretty invasive. It's a very vulnerable thing to have happen to you,” he said. “We've got a newborn at home, and we've only been living in the neighborhood about a year, and part of the reason why we moved here is because the neighborhood's so great. We have amazing neighbors, people that watch out for each other, but this is something that unless you were awake 24 hours a day, you're not going to really be able to stop.”
Community Response and Awareness
The rise in car thefts has prompted a stronger sense of community awareness and action. Residents are now more cautious about securing their vehicles and keeping an eye on their surroundings. Local authorities are also stepping up efforts to combat the issue, including increased patrols and public education campaigns.
Experts suggest several steps that can help prevent car theft, such as:
- Using anti-theft devices like steering wheel locks or immobilizers
- Avoiding leaving keys in the car or visible from outside
- Parking in well-lit areas whenever possible
- Reporting any suspicious activity to the police immediately
These measures, while simple, can make a significant difference in reducing the risk of vehicle theft. As the community grapples with this growing problem, it's clear that vigilance and cooperation are essential in protecting homes and belongings.
Looking Ahead
With the continued rise in car thefts, Amherst residents are determined to take action. Local leaders are working to implement more effective security strategies, while community members are rallying together to support one another. The goal is to create a safer environment where families can feel secure and protected.
As the situation evolves, staying informed and proactive will be key. Residents are encouraged to stay updated on any new developments and to continue sharing information within the neighborhood. Together, they hope to turn the tide against car theft and restore a sense of safety and peace in their community.
