Amazon Union Leader Chris Smalls Assaulted in Israel During Aid Mission

The Detainment of Chris Smalls: A Violent Encounter During a Humanitarian Mission
Chris Smalls, a prominent U.S. labor leader, was among 21 individuals detained by Israeli forces during a humanitarian aid mission over the weekend. The incident has sparked widespread condemnation from advocacy groups and raised serious concerns about the treatment of activists involved in such efforts.
The Freedom Flotilla Coalition, an organization that supports peaceful humanitarian missions, released a statement on social media condemning the violent treatment of Smalls. According to the coalition, when Smalls arrived at an Israeli prison, he was physically assaulted by seven uniformed individuals. He was choked and kicked in the legs, leaving visible signs of violence on his neck and back.
The statement also highlighted that when Smalls’ lawyer met with him, he was surrounded by six members of Israel’s special police unit. This level of force was not used against other detained activists, leading the coalition to call for accountability for the assault and discriminatory treatment Smalls faced.
The incident occurred on Saturday when Israeli forces intercepted the Handala, a vessel carrying humanitarian aid to Gaza. The ship was part of a larger effort to deliver essential supplies to the region. In total, 21 passengers, including Smalls, were detained. However, eyewitnesses and the Flotilla Coalition reported that Smalls was singled out during the raid and subjected to brutal force that was not used against any other passengers.
Smalls, who gained national attention in 2022 after successfully leading the unionization of an Amazon warehouse in Staten Island, is known as a labor activist. On this mission, he was the only Black member of the aid delegation. His supporters argue that this makes the violence he faced even more troubling.
The coalition’s statement has ignited growing outrage online, especially given the lack of public response from U.S. government officials. Many have questioned why there has been no public outcry from the Trump administration or mainstream press, given that Smalls is a U.S. citizen on a humanitarian mission.
Days before his detention, Smalls spoke remotely from a ship with the Real News Network about the purpose of the mission, what it was like on board, how they were staying safe, and his thoughts on the crisis. He emphasized his commitment to the cause, stating that as a labor leader and tax-paying U.S. citizen, he could no longer be complicit in the suffering of nearly half a million people in less than two years.
Smalls acknowledged the risks involved in the mission, noting that it is considered one of the most dangerous military operations in the world. He drew upon his experience as a whistleblower and union organizer to emphasize his readiness for the challenges ahead.
When asked about what he would want his final message to be in the event of his death, Smalls expressed deep concern for the future of his children and the world they would inherit. “The one thing I don’t want to happen is my kids being in the world that we live in right now,” he said. “Every time a Palestinian child dies, a piece of humanity dies with it.”
He added, “We should be ashamed to sit by and stand by and watch these innocent people be slaughtered every day … Every day I opened up my Instagram, every day I opened up my Twitter or any social media platform, all we see is death. And I know as a father, as a civilian, I can’t stand with it.”
Smalls concluded by urging people to remember the importance of fighting for humanity. “Gaza is showing us how to love,” he said. “This is a world that we do not want to live in, and that’s what we have to fight for.”
