Alperen Sengun's Plan for Improvement

Alperen Sengun has emerged as one of the most consistent and impactful players on the Houston Rockets over the past two seasons. His contributions were particularly notable during the team’s recent playoff run, where he stood out as a key player. While his offensive skills have been widely praised, Sengun has faced ongoing scrutiny regarding his defensive performance. However, there is positive news for Rockets fans as Sengun prepares to make significant improvements in the upcoming season.

During an appearance on a Turkish podcast, Sengun outlined three main areas he plans to focus on: shooting, finishing around the rim, and conditioning. He emphasized that improving his overall fitness will not only enhance his performance on offense but also significantly impact his defensive capabilities.

“I am working on my conditioning. I don’t want to lose my condition at all. Or my shape, compared to last year. It helped me on defense, and I got more playing time,” Sengun stated.

Sengun has acknowledged the criticism he has received from the media, but he remains committed to addressing these concerns. By focusing on conditioning, he aims to be more effective on the defensive end. Additionally, he highlighted how the team’s use of a double big lineup has benefited him, both defensively and offensively.

“Whatever the team needed, I was that player. I’ve always been the guy willing to give that. Defense? Defense! Offense? Offense! Our coaching staff is built around a strong defensive philosophy. So I play alongside great defensive players. That’s why things got easier for me when Coach Udoka brought the double big lineup at the end of the year. Battling the opposing big men inside while also going on offense used to tire me out. This time around, my performance improved by the end of the season. Because I play in a double big line-up. Now I’ve got more energy for offense and defense.”

Houston's Roster Enhancements

The Rockets have made several strategic moves this offseason to bolster their roster, particularly in the frontcourt. They added Clint Capela, a former fan-favorite, and retained Steven Adams. With these additions, the team now has three reliable big men who can rotate in and out of the game, ensuring they remain fresh and energetic throughout the season.

This depth allows the Rockets to maintain a strong presence in the paint, which is crucial for both offensive and defensive success. The combination of Capela, Adams, and Sengun provides a solid foundation for the team, especially when paired with perimeter players like Amen Thompson and Tari Eason, who contribute to the overall defensive effort.

A Stronger Offensive Threat

One of the most significant moves the Rockets made this offseason was acquiring Kevin Durant. The team recognized the need for a true go-to scorer after their playoff run, and adding Durant addresses that need. Replacing Jalen Green with Durant has the potential to make the Rockets’ offense more potent than ever before.

However, it’s important to note that the Western Conference has also seen improvements from other teams. Looking at the championship odds for the 2025-26 season, the Rockets are ranked third among Western Conference teams, behind the Oklahoma City Thunder and the Denver Nuggets. They finished second in the standings last season, indicating that they are already a competitive force.

If Sengun continues to improve his defensive game, the Rockets could become a formidable team. They already rank among the best defensively in the league, and with their big men playing stronger defense and perimeter players contributing to the effort, Houston could be a serious threat in the playoffs.

Looking Ahead

With a strong roster, a clear plan for improvement, and a commitment to defending at a high level, the Rockets are positioned well for the upcoming season. Fans can expect to see a more balanced team that excels both offensively and defensively. If Sengun continues to work on his conditioning and defensive skills, the Rockets could be a team to watch in the Western Conference.
