The Rise of Hockey Romance in BookTok

Hockey romance novels have become a major force in the world of BookTok, with one of the most popular subgenres now making its way to television. This exciting development marks a significant milestone for fans of the genre, especially those who have followed Elle Kennedy’s Off Campus series since its debut in 2015.

The Off Campus series, which features steamy college romances, has sold over 3 million copies, proving its popularity among readers. In October 2024, Amazon MGM Studios announced that it would adapt the books into a TV series, with Louisa Levy and Gina Fattore as co-showrunners. The show is expected to take a similar approach to Bridgerton, with each season focusing on a new couple from the five-book series as they navigate fake dating, heartbreak, love triangles, and hookups that turn into real romances.

Elle Kennedy expressed her excitement about the adaptation on Instagram, stating, “The Briar universe is coming to your screens!” While other highly anticipated book-to-series adaptations like Fourth Wing may take longer to arrive, this hockey romance series is set to debut much sooner.

When Will the 'Off Campus' TV Series Be Released?

Although an official release date has not been announced, the Off Campus series has already received a series order, ensuring that it will be made. This means the show is guaranteed to move forward with production, unlike projects still in development.

Filming for the first season began in the summer of 2025, and in a July 28 interview with Deadline, Vernon Sanders, Prime Video’s Head of TV, confirmed that the show is "definitely going to be launching in 2026." Fans can expect to see the first season later this year, bringing the beloved stories to life on screen.

What Is the Plot of 'Off Campus'?

The Off Campus book series consists of five titles: The Deal, The Mistake, The Score, The Goal, and The Legacy. Each book follows a different relationship between a member of the Briar U hockey team and a female student, exploring the challenges and triumphs of college life.

While each book can be read as a standalone, reading them in order reveals how characters from earlier books appear as supporting figures in later installments, similar to the structure of Bridgerton. There are even several spinoff novels for dedicated fans.

The TV show will follow the same order as the books, with season 1 focusing on The Deal. The story centers on Hannah Wells, a music major who despises hockey but has a long-time crush on Justin, the singer of a college rock band. To win his attention, she devises an intricate plan involving jealousy and a fake date with Garrett Graham, the star of the hockey team. But when a wild night changes everything, Garrett begins to question whether their relationship should remain fake after all.

Who Has Been Cast in the 'Off Campus' TV Show?

In May 2025, Deadline reported that the cast for the first season of Off Campus had been finalized, with some supporting actors set to take center stage in future seasons.

Ella Bright, a BAFTA nominee known for her role as young Kate Middleton, will play Hannah Wells. Belmont Cameli, best known for Until Dawn, will portray Garrett Graham. Josh Heuston, from Dune: Prophecy, will play Justin, Hannah's rock-star crush. Khobe Clarke will play Beau Maxwell, the quarterback of Briar’s football team, while Steve Howey will appear as Garrett’s father, Phil Graham, a retired hockey player.

Other notable additions include Antonio Cipriano, Stephen Kalyn, and Jalen Thomas Brooks, who will play Garrett’s teammates. Mika Abdalla will appear in season 1 as Allie Hayes, the eventual love interest of Dean Di Laurentis.
