Victims of the Midtown Manhattan Shooting Identified

Four individuals were tragically killed in a shooting that occurred inside a Midtown Manhattan office building on Monday night. The victims have now been identified, and their stories reveal a mix of professional dedication, personal sacrifice, and community impact.

NYPD Officer Didarul Islam

Among the victims was NYPD Officer Didarul Islam, who was providing additional security at the building as part of a program allowing private companies to hire NYPD officers. Islam worked out of the 47th Precinct in the Bronx and leaves behind two young sons and a pregnant wife. New York Governor Kathy Hochul spoke with his wife, who expressed her grief in broken English by asking for prayers. Hochul ordered flags to be flown at half-staff statewide and expressed her condolences for the loss of the officer.

A funeral is planned for Thursday, honoring the life of a dedicated public servant.

Wesley LePatner

Wesley LePatner, a senior managing director at Blackstone, was another victim of the shooting. She had worked at the global investment firm for over a decade and was known for her leadership and contributions to various institutions. LePatner was also a Yale University alum and served on several boards, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Abraham Joshua Heschel School. Her passing left behind two children, one of whom was a seventh grader at the Heschel School.

The school released a statement expressing deep sorrow, highlighting LePatner's brilliance and kindness. Governor Hochul praised her as a devoted mother and expressed solidarity with her family during this difficult time.

Aland Etienne

Aland Etienne, an unarmed security guard working for McLane Security Inc., was also among the victims. He had been a union member since 2017 and was described by his brother, Smith Etienne, as a loving father. His family is currently processing the tragedy and offering prayers for those affected.

Julia Hyman

Julia Hyman, the fourth victim, worked for Rudin Management on the 33rd floor of the office building. A graduate of the Cornell Peter and Stephanie Nolan School of Hotel Administration, she was known for her determination and warmth. Her colleagues at Cornell expressed deep grief over her loss, acknowledging her contributions to the academic community.

Mayor Adams noted that the gunman had taken the wrong elevator, leading him to Rudin Management offices instead of the NFL headquarters. The investigation into the shooting is ongoing.

Injured NFL Employee

An NFL employee was shot and hospitalized with serious injuries but is in stable condition. NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell expressed concern for the injured colleague, stating that he is surrounded by family and the NFL community. The NFL offices will remain closed until at least August 8, with employees instructed to work remotely.

Goodell also thanked the team for their compassion and support during this challenging time.

Ongoing Investigation

The motive behind the shooting remains unclear. A note recovered from the scene reportedly blamed the National Football League for the shooter’s traumatic head injury, despite the individual never having played in the league. The 44-story tower where the incident occurred houses offices for several major corporations, including KPMG and Blackstone, in addition to the NFL. Investigators are continuing to piece together the events leading up to the tragic incident.
