Alabama sex trafficking ring investigation: New arrests, more victims speak out

Overview of the Child Sex Trafficking Ring in Bibb County
Authorities in Bibb County have uncovered a disturbing child sex trafficking ring that has led to multiple arrests and the identification of several victims. The investigation, which began in February, has revealed a complex operation involving at least seven suspects and ten identified victims. However, officials believe there may be more children involved who have yet to come forward.
The operation took place in an underground storm shelter located near a home in Brent, Alabama. This hidden location was used to exploit children, with some as young as three years old being victimized. The sheriff’s office has confirmed that while no children have been reported missing or abducted, the situation is still under active investigation.
Key Details from the Investigation
Sheriff Jody Wade emphasized the severity of the case, stating that it is the worst he has encountered in his 33 years of law enforcement. He described the conditions inside the shelter as deeply troubling, with children being drugged and restrained. “There were chairs and beds and things of that nature, and the children were drugged by Mr. Trejo and tied to the bed, into the chair, into a pole. And then people would come and pay money to have sex with these children,” said Assistant District Attorney Brian Jones.
The investigation has been ongoing since early this year, and authorities are working closely with the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) to determine if any of the suspects are in the country legally. Additionally, there are concerns about possible gang connections, though no official links have been confirmed.
Arrests and Charges
Several individuals have been arrested or indicted in connection with the case. The charges include human trafficking, rape, sodomy, kidnapping, and other serious offenses. Some of the key suspects include:
- William (Chase) McElroy: Charged with rape, human trafficking, sodomy, and kidnapping.
- Dalton Terrell: Facing similar charges, including human trafficking and sexual abuse.
- Andres Trejo: Indicted for human trafficking.
- Timothy St. John: Arrested on July 22 for rape, sodomy, kidnapping, beastiality, and animal abuse.
- Brewer: Charged with human trafficking.
- Ricky Terrell: Accused of rape.
- Sara Terrell: Alleged to have committed sexual torture and abuse of a child under 12.
A fourth individual, whose name has not been released, was also indicted but has not yet been arrested. Authorities believe there may be additional suspects involved in the case.
Challenges in the Investigation
One of the main challenges in the investigation has been identifying all the victims. According to Jones, some children may not be able to recall what happened due to being drugged. “There are some allegations with individuals that we will have a hard time identifying, just because we don’t know their names. And the children were drugged, according to one of the codefendants. And so they may not be able to recognize or be able to identify anyone,” he explained.
The district attorney also shared a photo of the storm shelter in hopes that it might help jog the memories of those who have not yet come forward. Law enforcement is urging anyone with information to contact the Bibb County Sheriff's Office.
