A Tragic Mistake in the Aftermath of a Plane Crash

The tragic crash of an Air India jet last month has left many British families in a state of shock and sorrow, not only due to the loss of their loved ones but also because of the disturbing revelations that some of the remains returned to them were incorrect. This shocking development has raised serious questions about the handling of the victims’ bodies and the procedures followed by Indian authorities.

According to James Healy-Pratt, an international aviation lawyer representing some of the British relatives, at least two UK nationals were misidentified after being repatriated. The situation became even more alarming when a coroner in London discovered that the DNA of several bodies had been mixed in one of the caskets. Dr. Fiona Shaw, who was involved in the initial repatriation process, noticed these DNA anomalies, which led to further scrutiny of the identification procedures.

Healy-Pratt explained that the mix-up occurred early on, prompting a heightened level of caution from the coroner. “She was then able to determine that one particular loved one was not at all who the family thought they were,” he said. This revelation has left many families grappling with the emotional and psychological impact of the mistake, as they now question whether they have received the correct remains of their loved ones.

The Details of the Crash

The crash, which took place on June 12, was one of the deadliest aviation accidents in a decade. All but one of the 242 passengers and crew members aboard the aircraft were killed when the plane lost momentum and crashed into a densely populated neighborhood in Ahmedabad, western India. The London-bound Boeing 787 Dreamliner had barely taken off from Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport when it spun out of control and plunged into the BJ Medical College and Hospital hostel. This tragic event also resulted in the deaths of 19 people on the ground.

While the definitive cause of the crash has yet to be released, a preliminary report suggested that the fuel control switches in the cockpit were flipped, depriving the engines of power. An audio recording from the black box revealed that one pilot asked the other why he had flipped the switches, to which the other responded that he did not. Moments later, the switches were flipped back to restore fuel supply, but it was too late to prevent the plane’s descent.

The Human Cost and Emotional Toll

Of the 242 passengers and crew, at least 169 were Indian nationals, seven were Portuguese, and one was from Canada. The sole survivor, Vishwash Kumar Ramesh, was among the 53 UK passengers on board. He described how he escaped by clinging onto a small space near the door by his seat, highlighting the chaos and fear experienced during the crash.

The families of three victims expressed their deep distress over the revelations, calling for authorities to act with care, coordination, and respect. They stated that recent developments have confirmed what many feared: that serious mistakes may have been made, and that the dignity and rights of victims and their families were not properly safeguarded.

Responses from Authorities

India’s foreign ministry has been working closely with the UK side since the concerns were raised. A spokesperson for the ministry, Randhir Jaiswal, emphasized that all mortal remains were handled with the utmost professionalism and respect. He added that the authorities are continuing to work with the UK on addressing any concerns related to the issue.

This incident comes at a time when India and the UK are strengthening their relationship, following a meeting between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and British Prime Minister Keir Starmer. During this meeting, discussions on a landmark free trade agreement are expected to take place. Healy-Pratt, who is advocating for financial justice for the families, believes the allegations will be part of the agenda.
