A Final Farewell: Community Comes Together for the Last Walk Across the Harbor Bridge

More than 600 people gathered for a special event that marked the end of an era. It was a final walk across the original Harbor Bridge, a moment that brought together residents from all walks of life to celebrate and say goodbye to a beloved landmark.

Built in 1959, the Harbor Bridge has been more than just a structure—it’s been a symbol of Corpus Christi. For decades, it stood as a vital link between neighborhoods and a place where memories were made. Now, with its replacement on the horizon, the community came together to honor its legacy one last time.

The Ramirez family was among those who joined the event, eager to make history. Ashlea Rosenbaum Ramirez shared her feelings about the experience, saying she wanted her 1-year-old daughter, Anastasia, to witness this moment. “I really wanted to have her experience it one last time,” she said. “My husband is from the area, and we just wanted to experience it together before we start embarking on traveling to the new.”

Ramirez described the event as a beautiful experience. “The views are great. The water is amazing, so it's just beautiful to get out there and see so many people getting active. That's my favorite part of events like this,” she added.

The event was organized by the Corpus Christi Downtown Management District (DMCD), which played a key role in making the final walk possible. Arlene Medrano, the executive director of DMC, spoke about the significance of the day. She mentioned that 15 years ago, a beloved employee named Alan started the Bridge Walk program. Now, as he prepares to retire, this final walk became a meaningful gesture.

“Alan is retiring at the end of the year, and he loves bridges. He started this program all those years ago, and this was really important for him too,” Medrano said. “I didn’t want him to retire without having his final bridge walk. I know he’s very proud to say that he has led over 31,000 people over the bridge, and he can add an additional 500 to that today.”

Medrano expressed pride in organizing the event, calling it a historic moment for the community. “We have many loyal walkers who have continued to come out religiously for the last 15 years. We wanted to give the community an opportunity to say goodbye to our bridge by doing a symbolic walk over it.”

The event also served as a chance for different generations to come together. Many attendees had grown up in Corpus Christi, and their parents had walked the same bridge before them. It was a bittersweet moment, filled with nostalgia and excitement for what lies ahead.

“I think it's a bittersweet moment where you're letting go of something old but embracing something new and beautiful,” Ramirez said. “We’re just really excited and happy for the city.”

As the final walk came to an end, the community left with a sense of gratitude and hope. The Harbor Bridge may be going, but its legacy will live on through the memories and experiences shared by those who walked across it one last time.
