A sanctuary in the desert: New health clinic opens in Las Vegas Trail

A New Era of Health and Community in Las Vegas Trail
A groundbreaking health clinic has opened in the Las Vegas Trail neighborhood of Fort Worth, marking a significant milestone for the area. This new facility has ended the neighborhood's status as a healthcare desert, providing much-needed medical services to thousands of residents who previously had limited access to care.
The clinic, which began serving patients on July 23, includes a Cook Children's Health Care System neighborhood clinic and a JPS Health Network medical home. According to Cook Children's, the clinic is expected to serve over 100,000 people living in the neighborhood and nearby areas, including more than 20,000 children aged 14 and younger. The 40,000-square-foot health center was built on 3.7 acres of donated land at the intersection of Calmont Avenue and Cherry Lane.
Before the clinic opened, residents faced significant challenges in accessing healthcare. A 2022 LVT transformation plan highlighted that about one in every four families in the neighborhood lacked reliable transportation. For these families, a trip to the doctor could take well over an hour. For example, getting to the Northside Community Health Center near Sansom Park would require a 20-minute walk to a bus stop, a 32-minute bus ride, and another 20-minute walk to finally reach the clinic.
One patient who will benefit from the new clinic is Yolanda Phillips, a mother of two and resident of Las Vegas Trail. Phillips shared that past trips to the doctor were inconvenient and difficult. She noted that visits to urgent cares or the emergency room "just took forever." Now, with the clinic just down the street, it is much more convenient for her to take her two children to the doctor and also for herself to receive treatment.
Additional Services and Community Resources
The health clinic offers more than just medical care. It includes a demonstration kitchen staffed by a registered dietician, where families can participate in cooking and nutrition classes. There is also a food pantry operated by West Aid Food Pantry, allowing patients to shop for free food five days a week.
In addition, the clinic features a Fort Worth Police Department storefront, aimed at fostering community engagement and trust. Another key component is a workforce training program operated by JPS, Cook Children's, Tarrant County College, and Workforce Solutions. The program's first cohort of 15 students will participate in a 12-week training program designed to prepare them for entry-level healthcare opportunities at Cook Children's and JPS.
Community Investment and Future Goals
The Las Vegas Trail neighborhood has been the focus of renewed attention and investment since 2017, when local media highlighted some of the area's most pressing challenges, including high rates of poverty and crime, limited access to fresh food, public transportation, safe housing, and healthcare.
The area, also known as Western Hills or Western Hills North, is bordered by Interstate 30 and Camp Bowie Boulevard West to the north and south, and Cherry Lane and Loop 820 to the east and west.
Increased access to healthcare was one of several priorities outlined in the 2022 neighborhood transformation plan. However, there are still other goals for the neighborhood. Council member Michael Crain, who represents the neighborhood on City Council, emphasized improving housing as a top priority moving forward.
Crain estimated that at least 1,500 housing units are currently empty due to being out of code or other quality issues. The city has focused on increased code enforcement in the neighborhood, as well as rezoning parts of the area to allow for denser development. Crain also pointed out that the neighborhood lacks businesses like coffee shops and restaurants, and he hopes to encourage more of these spaces to open in Las Vegas Trail.
"That's my hope at this point, that we start creating those places and spaces for people to feel this is really a community," Crain said.
