New Offensive Coordinator Shares Insights on 49ers' Wide Receiver Room

Klay Kubiak, the newly appointed Offensive Coordinator for the San Francisco 49ers, recently addressed the media to provide an update on the team’s wide receiver group during training camp. His comments offered a glimpse into the current state of the position and the progress being made by key players.

One of the primary topics of discussion was Brandon Aiyuk, who is currently recovering from a knee injury in 2024. Despite his injury, Aiyuk has remained actively involved in team activities. Kubiak highlighted that Aiyuk is not just going through rehab in isolation but is fully integrated into the team’s operations.

“He's out there every day,” Kubiak said. “He’s with those guys. He’s very much a part of the position group. He’s not just isolated doing his rehab and then being around the building. He’s in the individual drills with them, and he’s on the field. When we are in meetings, he’s engaged. When we’re at walkthroughs, he’s with those guys. He’s helping [wide receivers/passing game specialist Leonard Hankerson] Hank kind of coach on the side. I’m really happy with BA right now with where he is at.”

Aiyuk’s presence at training camp shows his commitment to staying connected with the team and contributing in any way possible. Kubiak emphasized that while Aiyuk is still working through his rehab, he is making steady progress and is expected to be ready when the time comes.

Jordan Watkins Steps Into Expanded Role

With several wide receivers dealing with injuries, including Jauan Jennings and Jacob Cowing, rookie Jordan Watkins has taken on a larger role within the offense. Kubiak praised Watkins’ mental approach and preparation, noting that he has been impressive both in spring practices and during OTAs.

“Another guy we’re impressed with mentally,” Kubiak said. “He did a good job in the spring, obviously he had a good OTAs, but coming back and just starting to stack days and stack in the mental, that’s the strain on a rookie. Obviously, the strain on your body, but then the mental strain of showing up to practice every day and being on it. And he does that, right? He has shown that he can handle the mental load. He does a really good job and he’s just got to keep getting better and keep showing up to practice and getting after it.”

Watkins has demonstrated resilience and a strong work ethic, which are crucial traits for a rookie navigating the demands of the NFL. Kubiak believes that as he continues to gain experience, Watkins will only improve and become more valuable to the team.

Ricky Pearsall Shows Promise

Ricky Pearsall, a second-year receiver, has also been making waves in training camp. Kubiak noted that Pearsall has been given a scheduled day off today as part of a gradual ramp-up plan. This approach allows him to build up his stamina and avoid overexertion.

“I just think the more Ricky’s out there, the more you see him, his route running, how polished it’s become,” Kubiak said. “I think as the year went on last year, he just got so much better versus man-to-man coverage. The more man coverage you see, the more physical DB play you see. Ricky gets better and that excites me a lot. He’s a guy who’s going to rise to the occasion with more physical, defensive back play but he’s got to be out there. He’s got to be consistent.”

Pearsall’s development has been notable, and Kubiak is optimistic about his potential. He believes that with continued consistency and health, Pearsall could become a significant contributor to the offense.

Injuries and Rehabilitation Efforts

Regarding Jauan Jennings’ calf injury, Kubiak acknowledged that the team will continue to monitor his progress on a daily basis. Similarly, Jacob Cowing has been attending meetings regularly and remains engaged with the team.

“Same things, we talked about with BA, but just meeting rooms, being attentive, being dialed in, like you’re going out there to practice. Just preparing mentally, being on the side and watching from the side, and being engaged with the group. That’s all you can do. And then taking care of your rehab and getting your body ready to go from when the time comes,” Kubiak said.

Both players are focusing on their rehabilitation and mental preparation, ensuring they are ready to return when the time is right. Their commitment to staying involved with the team reflects the positive culture within the organization.
