Tragic Shooting in Midtown Manhattan Leaves Four Dead
A tragic shooting occurred on Monday inside a Midtown Manhattan office tower, resulting in the deaths of four individuals, including an off-duty New York City police officer. A fifth person was critically injured, and the suspected gunman fatally shot himself. Authorities are investigating the incident, which has left the community in shock and mourning.
Victims of the Shooting
Among those killed was Julia Hyman, a 27-year-old employee of Rudin Management. She began working at the company as an associate in November and was on the 33rd floor when the shooting took place. Her identification was confirmed by a source who chose to remain anonymous due to her family's decision not to publicly release her name. Hyman graduated from the Cornell Peter and Stephanie Nolan School of Hotel Administration and attended Riverdale Country School in the Bronx.
Another victim was Aland Etienne, a security guard who worked at the building where the shooting occurred. According to Manny Pastreich, president of Union 32BJ, Etienne was shot while taking cover behind a security desk. He was described as a dedicated employee and a “New York hero” by Pastreich.
Wesley LePatner, a senior employee at Blackstone, was also among the victims. As the global head of its Core+ Real Estate business and chief executive of the Blackstone Real Estate Income Trust, LePatner was deeply respected within the firm. The company expressed deep sorrow over her loss, calling her a beloved member of the Blackstone family.
The slain officer was identified as Didarul Islam, 36, a 3 1/2-year veteran of the NYPD. Born in Bangladesh, he was working at 345 Park Avenue in a private security role. Mayor Eric Adams praised his bravery and dedication, stating that he embodied what the city stands for.
The Suspect and His Background
The suspect, Shane Devon Tamura, 27, was employed by the Horseshoe Las Vegas hotel and casino. According to a statement from the company, Tamura was a surveillance department employee. He had a documented mental health history, but the motive behind the shooting remains unknown.
Tamura was licensed to carry a gun in Nevada. Police found a rifle case with rounds, a loaded revolver, ammunition, magazines, a backpack, and prescription medication in his BMW. Surveillance video showed him exiting a double-parked BMW and carrying a rifle before entering the building.
Details of the Shooting
According to police commissioner Jessica Tisch, the suspect opened fire on the NYPD officer as he entered the building and shot a woman who tried to take cover. He then sprayed the lobby with gunfire, shot a security guard, and another man in the lobby. He proceeded to the 33rd floor, where he shot one person before fatally shooting himself.
Tamura’s BMW was recorded passing through Colorado on Saturday, then Nebraska and Iowa on Sunday. The car was in Columbia, New Jersey, as recently as 4:24 p.m. ET on Monday before he drove into New York City.
Reactions and Impact
President Donald Trump expressed his condolences in a statement following the shooting. Former New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo also reacted, honoring the officer who lost his life. Both leaders emphasized the need for understanding and support during this difficult time.
The office building, which serves as the headquarters of the NFL and houses top financial firms like Blackstone and KPMG, will remain closed as authorities continue their investigations. The community is coming together to support the families of the victims and to remember the lives lost.
As the investigation continues, the tragedy serves as a reminder of the importance of safety, unity, and compassion in the face of such devastating events.
