Three Lorain Police Officers Wounded in Ambush Shooting

Three officers from the Lorain Police Department were injured in what authorities are calling an ambush shooting. The incident occurred on July 23, when the officers were on patrol in the River Bend Drive area near the Colorado Industrial Park. At around 1 p.m., they stopped for lunch when they encountered a 28-year-old man from Lorain.

According to Elyria Police Chief James Welsh, the man began firing at the officers with a rifle while they remained inside their patrol cars. All three officers were wounded, with one sustaining serious injuries. The officers returned fire, and one of them managed to exit his vehicle and call for backup.

Two of the officers were transported by helicopter to MetroHealth Medical Center in Cleveland, while another was taken to Mercy Health - Lorain Hospital. One officer suffered a hand injury, and the other two were shot multiple times. The suspect was shot and killed at the scene, as confirmed by Lorain Deputy Police Chief Michael Failing.

The Elyria Police Department is leading the initial investigation into the incident, with the Lorain County prosecutor and the Bureau of Criminal Investigation (BCI) also involved in the probe.

Similarly, the Summit County Sheriff’s Office shared its condolences on social media, writing, “Our thoughts go out to the officers and their families. We pray they make a full and speedy recovery.” The Norton Police Department issued a statement expressing concern for the officers and their loved ones, urging the public to pray for their recovery.

The Fraternal Order of Police of Ohio also voiced its support, condemning the attack as a “brazen assault” and emphasizing the risks that officers face daily. Jay McDonald, the president of the organization, encouraged donations to support the affected officers and their families. Donations can be made through the Lorain Police Officers Charitable Foundation or via the Fraternal Order of Police of Ohio Foundation website.

Reactions from State Leaders

State Rep. Joe Miller, representing the 53rd District, shared his support on social media, saying, “I am praying for the quick and full recovery of our Lorain Police Officers who were shot in the line of duty today. My thoughts are also with the families of the officers in this difficult moment.”

Ohio Governor Mike DeWine and Lt. Gov. Jim Tressel also responded to the incident. DeWine stated, “I have been briefed on the horrible officer-involved shooting in Lorain, which appears to have been a targeted attack on law enforcement.” He added, “Fran and I are praying for the three Lorain Police Department officers who were shot in the line of duty today, and our thoughts are also with their families, friends, and fellow officers in northeast Ohio.”

Tressel expressed similar sentiments, saying, “Ellen and I were heartbroken to learn about the horrific attack in Lorain involving three police officers.” He emphasized the importance of the work done by law enforcement and condemned the violence.
