The Long Fight for Frankie's Freedom

For nearly two decades, a capuchin monkey named Frankie has been living in a cage at a Pet Stop store in Shawnee, Kansas. While he is not available for sale, his presence in the store has sparked significant controversy among animal rights activists. Frankie’s situation has become the focus of multiple advocacy efforts aimed at securing his release and ensuring he receives proper care.

Early Advocacy Efforts

In 2015, the Animal Advocates Coalition of Kansas City launched one of the first major campaigns to free Frankie. They created a petition titled "Release Frankie to a Sanctuary" on Change.org, calling for his relocation to a reputable sanctuary. The petition highlighted the social and intellectual needs of capuchin monkeys, which are known to live in complex groups that require both mental and physical stimulation.

The coalition suggested several potential sanctuaries, including the Performing Animal Welfare Society, Jungle Friends Rescue, and the Primate Rescue Center. Although the campaign eventually closed, it managed to collect over 1,585 signatures, showing early public support for Frankie’s cause.

New Push for Change

In December 2023, another initiative was launched by In Defense of Animals (IDA). Their campaign, titled "Free Frankie the Monkey from a Kansas Pet Store Cage & Send Him to Sanctuary," emphasized the emotional and psychological toll of isolation on social primates. The group provided a list of actions for supporters, including sending email templates to Pet Stop and reporting potential violations of USDA regulations.

IDA also pointed out that keeping a primate in prolonged isolation may violate federal guidelines regarding primate housing. Those concerned about these issues can file a complaint with the USDA through their Animal Care Complaint Line or online. With over 13,000 signatures, the campaign argues that accredited sanctuaries nearby are ready to provide Frankie with a more natural environment where he can live with other capuchins and receive appropriate care.

PETA Joins the Cause

PETA, or the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, also became involved in the effort to free Frankie. Their petition, "Urge Pet Stop to Send Frankie the Capuchin to an Accredited Sanctuary," highlights the ethical concerns of keeping a capuchin in isolation for commercial purposes. The organization argues that such confinement denies Frankie essential social interactions and behaviors that are crucial for his well-being.

PETA’s proposed solution is similar to previous campaigns: relocating Frankie to a sanctuary where he can live in a more natural setting, receive veterinary care, and interact with other capuchins. With over 52,000 signatures, the petition urges supporters to contact Pet Stop owner Greg Smith and request that the company move Frankie to a more suitable environment.

Ongoing Efforts and Public Support

Despite the passage of time, the fight for Frankie’s freedom continues to gain momentum. Each of these petitions has contributed to raising awareness about the conditions in which he lives and the need for change. As more people join the cause, the pressure on Pet Stop increases, making it more likely that Frankie will eventually be relocated to a sanctuary where he can thrive.

Supporters of Frankie’s cause continue to advocate for his well-being, emphasizing that animals like him deserve to live in environments that meet their physical and emotional needs. Whether through petitions, public outreach, or legal action, the movement to free Frankie shows no signs of slowing down.
