Overview of the Charges and Court Appearances

Three of the five individuals involved in a violent brawl that took place in downtown Cincinnati last weekend made appearances in court on Wednesday. The incident, which quickly went viral, has led to several charges being filed against those suspected of involvement.

Cincinnati police reported that Montianez Merriweather, 34, and Dekyra Vernon, 24, were arrested on charges of felonious assault and aggravated riot. A third suspect, Jermaine Matthews, 39, also appeared in court and was charged with aggravated riot and assault. All three defendants were present during the court session.

According to a detective from the Cincinnati Police Department, Merriweather was described as the "catalyst" for what they called a "coordinated attack." The detective stated that Merriweather whispered to a "co-defendant" before starting an argument with the victim, leading to the fight. It is alleged that Merriweather approached the victim from behind and struck them in the face, resembling an ambush.

The police have additional video footage from a building-mounted camera that allegedly shows Merriweather and Matthews chasing the victim before attacking them. This evidence was presented during the court proceedings.

Legal Proceedings and Bonds

Merriweather was released on a $500,000 secured bond. However, his legal history includes prior arrests for receiving stolen property and illegal possession of a firearm as a convicted felon. He was previously convicted of aggravated robbery in 2009.

Matthews' defense attorney, Brandon Fox, argued that the evidence presented in court and on social media does not tell the full story. According to Fox, Matthews was in the area for business purposes when a conflict arose. He claims that Matthews attempted to intervene after one of the victims asked for some of his marijuana, which he shared.

Fox further alleged that a fight broke out down the sidewalk, and Matthews tried to stop it. He claims that after the fight, one of the participants kicked Matthews’ vehicle and slapped him in the face. During the hearing, detectives confirmed that one of the victims was seen hitting Matthews in the face. They are currently investigating this claim.

Matthews was given a $100,000 secured bond on the charges against him. Detectives also allege that Matthews was seen on surveillance footage kicking a victim to the ground and hitting another person.

Involvement of Dekyra Vernon

Prosecutors also showed a photo depicting Vernon’s alleged involvement in the incident, where she hit one of the female victims. WLWT cameras could not see the photo in full during the hearing.

Detectives stated that Vernon was initially a bystander watching the brawl. She then approached and hit a woman who was trying to protect someone from the ground. The victim, who is Russian, returned to Russia on Sunday. Vernon then went back to the sidewalk and punched another woman. At that point, a "co-defendant" is seen on video knocking that victim out.

Vernon has an outstanding warrant for a traffic violation. She was given a $200,000 secured bond on the charges.

The Brawl and Public Reaction

The incident occurred on West Fourth and Elm streets in downtown Cincinnati early Saturday. Police stated that it began as a verbal altercation that escalated into physical violence. Videos of the brawl started circulating online on Saturday morning, with one particular video being shared hundreds of thousands of times across multiple platforms.

Local officials have expressed concern over the incident. One official, Pillich, made a strong statement after viewing the video, which has been seen by millions. “In order to dissuade people from committing these types of offenses, I'm going to throw the book at them,” Pillich said.

This case highlights the ongoing challenges of addressing public violence and the role of social media in spreading such incidents. As the legal process continues, the community remains vigilant and concerned about the implications of this event.
