A Legacy of Skyward Spectacles

Since 1959, the Chicago Air & Water Show has been a cherished summer tradition, drawing crowds to the Windy City for an unforgettable display of aerial prowess. Each year, the event brings together residents and visitors from around the world to witness thrilling performances along the Lake Michigan shoreline. This year, the show will take place on August 16 and 17, offering an exciting lineup of military and civilian acts that continue to captivate audiences.

The Chicago Air & Water Show is not only one of the city's most anticipated events but also the largest free admission event of its kind. Attendees can enjoy live coverage through various platforms, including streaming online or using the Audacy app. The event showcases the incredible skill and dedication of military personnel while highlighting the best of what Chicago has to offer.

Military Acts Taking Center Stage

This year’s show features some of the most renowned military aviation teams in the country. The U.S. Army Parachute Team Golden Knights and the U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds are set to headline the event, delivering breathtaking performances that highlight their precision and expertise. Alongside them, other military units will take to the skies, including the U.S. Air Force C-17 Demo from the 15th Airlift Squadron, the Illinois Air National Guard KC-135 from the 126th Air Refueling Wing, and the Maryland Air National Guard A-10s from the 104th Fighter Squadron.

Additional military acts include the U.S. Coast Guard Search & Rescue Demo, the U.S. Marine Corps MV-22 (Osprey) Demo by the Medium Tiltrotor Squadron 365, and more. These performances not only entertain but also serve as a tribute to the service and sacrifice of military personnel.

Civilian Performers Bring Excitement

Beyond the military acts, the show also features a range of civilian performers who bring their own unique flair to the event. Bill Stein Airshows, Coleman Aerosports led by Kevin Coleman, and Folds of Honor Biplane with Ed Hamill are just a few of the names gracing the lineup. Other notable acts include Mini Jet Airshows by Tom Larkin, Muscle Biplane Machaira by Bob Richards, Super Stearman “Big Red” by Susan Dacy, and Warbird Thunder Airshows.

These civilian performers add an extra layer of excitement, showcasing vintage aircraft and modern aerobatics that appeal to aviation enthusiasts of all ages.

Additional Support and Performers

The event also includes support from local emergency services, such as the Chicago Police Department Helicopters and the Chicago Fire Department Air / Sea Rescue. Other organizations, including AFOPS, MWSS-272, MACG-28, 2d MAW, and the Marine Corps Air Station New River, contribute to the overall experience.

Additionally, units from the Indiana Air National Guard - 122nd Fighter Wing, Illinois Air National Guard - 182nd Airlift Wing, and the U.S. Air Force Reserve - 434th Air Refueling Wing will be present, further emphasizing the collaborative nature of the event.

Celebrating History and Tradition

As the Chicago Air & Water Show celebrates its 66th anniversary, it also marks a significant milestone: the 250th anniversary of the U.S. Army and Marine Corps. This historic occasion adds another layer of meaning to the event, reminding attendees of the long-standing legacy of military service.

Among the highlights this year is the appearance of World War II-era aircraft, such as the SNJ-2 and SNJ-3 (Ol Growler), which were used by the U.S. Navy and Marine Corps to train combat pilots. These planes will be flown by Warbird Thunder Airshows, offering a glimpse into the past and celebrating the rich history of aviation.

For those planning to attend, the event runs from 10:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. both days, with the action taking place along the Lake Michigan shoreline from Fullerton Avenue to Oak Street. North Avenue Beach serves as the central location for the show, providing a prime vantage point for spectators.

Whether you're a lifelong aviation enthusiast or simply looking for a family-friendly day out, the Chicago Air & Water Show promises an unforgettable experience filled with excitement, history, and community spirit.
