2021 Oscar-Winning Director Joins Tyler Perry DREAM Program

A Rising Director from Shreveport Joins Tyler Perry’s DREAM Program
Mark Bonner, a 30-year-old director from Shreveport, Louisiana, has been selected as one of the finalists for Tyler Perry’s DREAM program. This achievement marks a significant milestone in his career and highlights his growing influence in the film industry.
Bonner was born and raised in Shreveport, where he developed a passion for creativity at an early age. Although his high school, Fair Park College Preparatory, did not offer a film program, it didn’t deter him from pursuing his dreams. From the age of three, he showed a natural talent for storytelling, drawing, and theater. His love for creative expression was evident even in his childhood, where he would stage mini talent shows for his siblings.
A Trailblazer in Film
Bonner is not only a director but also the first Black winner of the Film Prize in 2021. His accomplishments have opened doors for others and inspired a new generation of filmmakers. He believes that being the first person to do something is a powerful way to pave the path for others.
“I was the first person to do so many things... It’s okay to be the first person because you can lead the path for others,” says Bonner.
His approach to filmmaking focuses on creating emotionally rich stories that evoke a wide range of feelings. He believes films should mirror the complexity of real human experiences, allowing viewers to connect on a personal level.
“A film should be complex, kind of like a person in that experience... everyone can get something from my film,” explains Bonner.
He values collaboration while maintaining his own vision. “I try to let them interpret it their way, but through my visions,” he says.
Notable Works and Emotional Moments
Bonner’s first film, Shreveport Sun, was a deeply personal project that showcased his ability to channel raw emotion into powerful scenes. He describes it as his first child and his first leap into the world of filmmaking.
Another of his favorite works is H Film and Red Deserts. He refers to Red Desert as his “special child,” highlighting its significance in his portfolio.
During his 2021 Film Prize win, the audience connected with the story of his upbringing. The moment he won was emotional and unforgettable. “I broke down crying when my name was announced... It’s still shaking to this day,” says Bonner.
Joining Tyler Perry’s DREAM Program
Being chosen for Tyler Perry’s DREAM program was a surreal experience for Bonner. Out of 100 finalists, he sees this as an opportunity to grow beyond just emails or casual interactions. “It was surreal... a warm feeling to get that news,” he says.
His goals include networking, seeking mentorship, absorbing industry knowledge, and eventually producing funded projects. “Knowledge is power. I want to absorb that knowledge,” he explains.
Advice for Aspiring Filmmakers
Bonner emphasizes the importance of research and self-belief. “Research, research, research, and then just believe that you can,” he advises. He also stresses the importance of a solid script as the foundation of any successful film.
“Script is the blueprint. If you want a strong structure of a building, you have to have the blueprint,” he says.
He suggests starting small and using close friendships to practice acting and writing. “Make it a daily task. It’s like fitness. Keep it as a regimen,” he adds.
The Impact of Films on Communities
Films have the power to inspire and bring people together by showcasing relatable, raw, and real stories. They highlight the importance of representation, especially for Black and Shreveport communities. “Films are so inspirational. It can really change the world,” says Bonner.
He cites Black Panther as an example of how films can impact communities and create a sense of belonging. “People want to see themselves. It’s very important to put those types of things out there,” he explains.
What’s Next?
Bonner plans to re-release Shreveport Sun for free on YouTube. His latest film, Bamboo Bridge, is currently making the festival circuit, and he hopes it will eventually come to his hometown.
A Personal Tribute
Bonner’s mother, Molly Bonner, recently passed away. She was a poet and a major source of inspiration for him. “I got all my talent from her,” he says.
The Challenge Ahead
Tyler Perry Studios is looking to develop the next big thing with its new project, Dream Collective Studios. Over 3,000 people applied, and Bonner made it to the final 100. These finalists will participate in four weeks of virtual sessions designed to educate, inspire, and cultivate a lasting community.
During these sessions, they will meet with directors and creative collaborators, covering topics such as career origin, art of collaboration, and case studies of trials and triumphs on and off set. Finalists will submit a short film script and materials for evaluation, with the chance to advance to an in-person experience.
Ten winners will be selected and flown out to Tyler Perry Studios for a 10-day hands-on training workshop, including short film preparations. Five grand prize winners will be announced in August, each receiving $30,000 in production funding from Tyler Perry Studios to make their short films this fall in the greater Atlanta area.
