A New Era for the Fantastic Four

The Fantastic Four have endured one of the most challenging journeys in cinematic history. From a film that was never released in 1994 to two underwhelming movies in the mid-2000s and a widely criticized reboot in 2015, Marvel’s First Family has struggled to find its place on the big screen. Despite being the foundation of Marvel’s comic book universe, every attempt to bring Reed Richards, Sue Storm, Johnny Storm, and Ben Grimm to life has been met with either ridicule or forgettable mediocrity. However, with the release of The Fantastic Four: First Steps, it seems the team might finally be on the right track.

Kevin Feige's Lessons from the Past

One of the most encouraging signs that First Steps will break the cycle is that Kevin Feige has been through this before. He has acknowledged the failures of earlier adaptations, stating, “I was around for those early Fantastic Four movies… and like all of the pre-MCU movies, I learned a lot. I always thought, if we ever got creative autonomy ourselves, we might do things a little differently.” This statement serves as a clear roadmap for what the new film aims to achieve.

Feige isn’t ignoring the past; he’s embracing it. He recognized the issues with previous films, such as the awkward tone of the 2005 movies and the disjointed nature of the 2015 reboot. Now, after building the most successful cinematic universe in film history, he has the opportunity to finally give justice to Marvel’s oldest superhero team.

A Shift in Cultural Attitudes

Feige also pointed out a significant cultural shift that has occurred since those earlier movies. “There was still a bit of a fear of being silly,” he said. The key difference now is that the MCU has found its sweet spot. Cosmic beings and fictional characters can be portrayed without fear of being too strange. Audiences today are not afraid of the weird, as long as it’s done well. This means that stretchy limbs, invisible force fields, fire trails, and rock-skinned fists are no longer seen as problematic.

The Right Team for the Job

Perhaps the strongest argument that First Steps will succeed is that Marvel has proven they can do the impossible. In 2008, few believed that a franchise built around Iron Man, an unknown hero to most outside of comic book circles, could launch a cinematic empire. But Marvel made it work. They repeated that success with even more obscure properties like Guardians of the Galaxy.

Marvel has also shown they can reinvent characters that were thought to be overdone. Spider-Man: Homecoming gave fresh life to a hero whose origin had already been shown in two previous franchises. By skipping the usual Uncle Ben story and focusing on Peter’s growth within the Avengers’ world, the MCU provided a new, better version. Now, with First Steps, Feige and his team are applying the same approach—honoring the heart of the original while bringing something new to the table.

What Makes This Version Different?

This version of the Fantastic Four is doing several things differently. The film is set in a retro time period, giving the team a unique identity in the MCU and opening doors for creative world-building. Franklin Richards is confirmed, and Galactus appears in his full comic-book glory, a far cry from the 2007 “cloud” version that left fans disappointed. Kevin Feige emphasized that the film will embrace the inherent “goofiness” of the team, allowing them to shine in a way that previous adaptations failed to achieve.

With the right approach, a strong creative team, and a deep understanding of what audiences want, The Fantastic Four: First Steps may finally be the redemption arc that fans have been waiting for.
