A New Era of Chinese Fantasy Gaming

Where Winds Meet is one of the most ambitious upcoming games, offering an immersive experience that blends open-world exploration with deep storytelling. Developed by Everstone Studio, this game is set to make its Western debut and promises a vast array of content. The game includes over 150 hours of single-player gameplay, a co-op mode for up to four players, and a shared online world that supports thousands of players all in a free-to-play format available on PlayStation 5, PC, and mobile platforms.

The lead designer, Chris Lyu, emphasizes that the primary goal was to create an immersive world. “Our core goal when we created this project was to deliver an immersive world experience,” he explains. “Of course, we faced many challenges since no other studio has made this kind of game before, so we didn’t have many references.” This unique approach has already resonated well in the Chinese market, where the game has been available for a few months and has achieved over 30 million downloads.

Lyu also mentions the positive reception from players. “The overall response has been pretty great, and we’ve received a lot of positive reviews,” he says. On social media platforms like Douyin and Xiaohongshu, there have been spontaneous discussions among players, with many sharing videos of their gameplay experiences. These videos often generate significant engagement from others. Additionally, the storyline has struck a chord with players, with some even shedding tears during emotional moments, sparking conversations about the game.

Monetization is another key aspect of Where Winds Meet. The game relies on the sale of cosmetic items, season passes, and gacha pulls. “We don’t have any pay-to-win elements in the game,” Lyu clarifies. “All of our monetization is based on making yourself look good. It’s about purchasing costumes, mounts, or visual effects for different skills and abilities. So it’s all about pleasing yourself.”

A Story Rooted in History

Set in the historical Five Dynasties and Ten Kingdoms period, Where Winds Meet is a distinctly Chinese game that draws heavily from the wuxia martial arts genre. The global version design lead, Soul, hopes that the game's appeal will transcend cultural barriers. “Rather than just expressing culture in a verbal manner, we prefer to create an atmosphere in which you can experience the whole wuxia spirit of martial justice,” they explain. “We let you experience the happiness, sorrow, and excitement of that era in this wuxia world.”

Wuxia stories are defined by characters who master special martial arts and achieve great things, as well as the idea of dual identities. “Famous warriors who have done legendary things often conceal themselves to blend in with society,” says narrative designers Avery Wang and Vera Du. The game’s mechanics reflect this, allowing players to interact with the world in ways that feel authentic to the wuxia spirit.

For example, players can run up the sides of trees or glide through the sky. In encounters with wildlife, such as bears in forests, players can use Mystic Arts to scare them away rather than fight. This unique approach enhances the game’s immersion and reflects the essence of wuxia.

A Rich Combat Experience

Combat is a central element of wuxia, and Where Winds Meet delivers a dynamic and engaging combat system. Although only seven types of weapons are available at launch, each offers a distinct playstyle. “Players can experience various builds and tactile combat,” says combat designer Zen. “Some weapons are heavier and more hefty, while others are more flexible and easy to use.”

Players can equip two weapon types at once, alternating between a primary and secondary slot. This allows for a wide range of combinations and strategies. Each weapon also features unique animations, thanks to extensive motion capture work. Executive lead designer David highlights the importance of motion capture in bringing the game’s combat to life. “We prioritized motion capture from the beginning in terms of our combat design,” he explains. “This is most exemplified in the way that the skills and abilities are shown in-game.”

The game also benefits from collaboration with award-winning action choreographer Stephen Tung Wai, who helped bring the quality of Chinese filmmaking to the in-game animations. Internal expertise within the team further enriches the combat design, drawing inspiration from traditional martial arts literature, films, and novels.

A World That Comes to Life

The game’s visuals and music contribute to its cinematic feel. Senior concept artist Zhong Zhou describes the effort put into recreating the historical setting. “We conducted field research, visiting Kaifeng and local museums to see cultural relics and heritage,” he explains. “We took photos for reference, as we were unable to build 3D models using scanning techniques.”

Attention to detail extends to every scene, with a focus on characters, people, and environment. “Wuxia emphasizes the importance of interpersonal connections, so when we recreate those elements, we draw inspiration from cinematic works and old ancient paintings and murals,” Zhou argues.

The music also plays a crucial role in the game’s atmosphere. Audio designer Yida explains that the music draws on traditional Chinese melodies and natural elements. “We collected folk music and ancient musical pieces during our research, and we discovered our main motifs for the music,” she says. “We also incorporate natural sounds like water, birds, and wind.”

Even sound effects are meticulously crafted, with real-world props used to create authentic audio. “Sometimes we use a stick or swing a baton, or even a book or paper to simulate the sound,” Yida explains. “After gathering these elements, we stack them up to find the best combination.”

With its rich storytelling, immersive combat, and stunning visuals, Where Winds Meet promises to be a groundbreaking title in the wuxia genre. Players can currently pre-register for the game on the official website to receive exclusive rewards.
