Rising Stars and Family Legacies at the U.S. Junior Amateur

The U.S. Junior Amateur is not just a tournament for young golfers—it’s a stage where family legacies, talent, and ambition collide. This year’s event at Trinity Forest Golf Club in Dallas features several standout players, many of whom come from families deeply rooted in professional golf. Among them are four sons of current or former PGA Tour players, each carrying the weight of their heritage while striving to make their own mark on the course.

Jackson Byrd, 18, is the son of Jonathan Byrd, a five-time PGA Tour winner and the 2022 Rookie of the Year. Byrd recently finished as runner-up at the Junior Invitational at Sage Valley and will begin his college career at Clemson this fall. His uncle, Jordan Byrd, serves as the head coach there, adding another layer of family influence to his journey.

Trevor Gutschewski, also 18, is the oldest son of Scott Gutschewski, a three-time Korn Ferry Tour winner. Gutschewski is defending his title this year, making him the first U.S. Junior champion to return for a second chance since Nick Dunlap in 2022. Despite missing the cut at the U.S. Open at Oakmont, he rebounded with a win at the Western Junior and will start his college career at Florida this fall.

Cameron Kuchar, 17, is the son of Matt Kuchar, a nine-time PGA Tour winner and multiple-time Ryder Cup participant. Kuchar recently finished as runner-up to Gutschewski at the Western Junior and has verbally committed to TCU. His father’s accomplishments have set a high bar, but Cameron is proving he can hold his own on the national junior stage.

Then there’s Charlie Woods, the 16-year-old son of 15-time major champion Tiger Woods. Charlie qualified for his second straight U.S. Junior Amateur, a tournament his father won three times among his nine USGA titles. A rising junior at the Benjamin School in Florida, Charlie has climbed into the top 20 of the AJGA rankings after winning the Team TaylorMade Invitational in May. He made his debut last year at Oakland Hills, finishing 240th in a field of 264 players.

Other Notable Storylines

This year’s field includes 264 players from 38 states and 33 countries, with the top 64 advancing to match play after 36 holes. The final 36-hole match play will take place on Saturday.

One of the most intriguing storylines is the dominance of left-handed players. The top three players in the field—Miles Russell, Luke Colton, and Tyler Watts—are all left-handed and ranked within the top 50 of the Official World Golf Ranking. Russell, 16, is the highest-ranked of the trio at No. 18. He has already won several junior tournaments and is looking to complete his collection of major titles by capturing the U.S. Junior.

Colton, an 18-year-old Vanderbilt commit, has competed in five USGA championships and twice reached match play at the U.S. Junior. Watts, 17, has been on a strong summer, winning the Sunnehanna Amateur and reaching the final of the North and South Amateur.

Another player to watch is Tyler Mawhinney, a 17-year-old from Florida who is making his U.S. Junior debut. Mawhinney already has a USGA title, having won the U.S. Amateur Four-Ball Championship with future Vanderbilt teammate Will Hartman. He also placed in the Round of 16 at last summer’s U.S. Amateur.

International Representation

Among the youngest competitors is Daniil Sokolov, a 14-year-old from Qatar, making him the first player from that country to compete in a USGA championship. Born in South Korea to Russian parents, Sokolov moved to Qatar at age five and has represented his adopted country in various international events.

Local Talent

Texas is well-represented in the field, with 17 players competing, second only to California. Reese Roberts, an 18-year-old from Dallas, is one of the standouts. A Missouri signee, Roberts attended Jesuit College Prep, the same high school as two-time U.S. Junior champion Jordan Spieth. He won the AJGA event named after Spieth last year and also claimed the Texas State Amateur at Trinity Forest.
