A Heroic Police Dog’s Legacy Lives On Through a Bronze Statue

A bronze statue of a heroic police dog who captured the hearts of many has been unveiled in the town where he once served. The statue honors PD Finn, a German Shepherd who became a symbol of bravery and dedication after being severely injured while protecting his handler.

In 2016, PD Finn suffered near-fatal injuries when he confronted an armed suspect in Stevenage, Herts., while on duty with PC Dave Wardell. Despite the life-threatening wounds to his head and chest, Finn survived thanks to life-saving surgery. His courage during this incident not only saved his handler’s life but also inspired a nationwide movement for better protection for service animals.

Finn went on to return to duty and retired in 2017, living with Dave and his family in Buntingford. He passed away in his sleep in July 2023 at the age of 14. To honor his legacy, a public ceremony was held on the two-year anniversary of his death, July 27, where a bronze statue was officially unveiled.

The statue, weighing 80kg, was created by specialist animal sculptor Suzie Marsh and took 11 months to complete. It was funded through public donations that exceeded £40,000, with the Thin Blue Paw Foundation playing a key role in its creation. Finn was an ambassador for the foundation, which supports police dogs and their handlers.

Dave Wardell, Finn’s owner and handler, shared his emotional reflections on the statue. He described Finn as his partner and best friend for over a decade. “I was completely lost when I had to say goodbye,” he said. “It was incredibly humbling when I found out that the Foundation wanted to create a memorial in his honor.”

He expressed admiration for how the sculptor captured Finn’s kind and gentle nature, as well as the focus in his eyes. “I hope it’ll become a place where others can come to pay tribute not only to Finn but to the thousands of police dogs who have worked to keep their communities safe.”

A Campaign for Better Protection

Finn’s story sparked a campaign called “Finn’s Law,” which aimed to introduce legal protections for service animals. The effort led to the passage of the Animal Welfare (Service Animals) Bill in 2019, marking a significant step forward in recognizing the importance of service animals.

Despite Finn’s heroic actions, his attacker was only charged with criminal damage, which left Dave deeply upset. This injustice fueled the duo’s high-profile campaign, highlighting the need for stronger legal measures to protect working animals.

Finn’s legacy continues to inspire change, not only through legislation but also through the enduring memory of his bravery. His story reminds people of the vital role that police dogs play in keeping communities safe.

Honoring a National Hero

Thin Blue Paw Chairman Kieran Stanbridge praised Finn’s contributions. “Finn was one of the most decorated police dogs in our history and not only served his community valiantly and loyally during his career, but put his life on the line to save Dave during a violent and dangerous incident.”

He added, “We felt he needed to be remembered and honored appropriately and we’re proud to have raised the funds to pay for this beautiful memorial in his memory. We also hope it will become a place of reflection and dedication for all police dogs, both past and present.”

Sculptor Suzie Marsh shared her pride in being chosen for the project. “I was delighted and honored to be chosen for this project and feel the result is a fitting memorial to a well-loved, brave and special dog.”

The unveiling of the statue serves as a lasting tribute to PD Finn’s incredible journey and the impact he had on those around him. It stands as a symbol of courage, loyalty, and the deep bond between police dogs and their handlers.
