Trump Claims Hamas is Stealing Aid in Gaza Famine

Trump Accuses Hamas of Stealing Aid in Gaza
President Donald Trump has repeatedly accused Hamas of stealing food and aid intended for the people of Gaza, emphasizing that the situation in the region is a "mess." During an appearance in Turnberry, Scotland, alongside European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, Trump addressed concerns about the humanitarian crisis in Gaza. When asked about the images of starving children, he expressed frustration, stating that goods are being stolen when they arrive.
“I see the children, and especially over the last couple of weeks, people are stealing the food, they’re stealing the money, they’re stealing the money for the food. They’re stealing weapons, they’re stealing everything,” Trump said. He added, “It’s a mess, that whole place is a mess. The Gaza Strip, you know it was given many years ago so they could have peace. That didn’t work out too well.”
Despite these claims, the Israeli military has stated there is no evidence that Hamas has systematically stolen aid. However, Trump continued to push his narrative, insisting that the issue is not solely a U.S. problem but an international one. “If we weren’t there, I think people would have starved, frankly. They would have starved, and it’s not like they’re eating well, but a lot of that food is getting stolen by Hamas. They’re stealing the food, they’re stealing a lot of things. You ship it in and they steal it, then they sell it,” he said.
International Response and Aid Efforts
Trump also mentioned that the U.S. had recently provided $60 million in aid for Gaza, but claimed that “nobody even acknowledged it.” He criticized other countries for not contributing to the effort, saying, “Nobody acknowledged it, nobody talks about it, and it makes you feel a little bad when you do that, and no other countries give anything.”
In addition to urging other nations to contribute, Trump emphasized that the U.S. would continue to send aid into Gaza. He also mentioned that he spoke with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, discussing a range of topics, including Iran. Trump suggested that this conversation would be part of his discussions with von der Leyen.
House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) echoed similar claims on NBC’s “Meet the Press,” stating that Israel’s ambassador to the U.S., Yechiel Leiter, and other officials have told him that Hamas has stolen “a huge amount” of food since the conflict began on October 7, 2023.
Strategic Decisions and Ceasefire Talks
Trump also highlighted the need for Israel to make decisions regarding the ongoing conflict in Gaza. “What’s going to happen? I don’t know,” he said. “Israel’s going to have to make a decision. I know what I’d do, but I don’t think it’s appropriate that I say.”
The Trump administration recently withdrew from ceasefire talks in Gaza, citing Hamas’s failure to engage in good faith. Steve Witkoff, Trump’s special envoy for peace missions, indicated that alternative plans are being considered to secure the release of Israeli hostages held by Hamas and to determine the future governance of the territory.
Ongoing Challenges in Gaza
As the humanitarian situation in Gaza continues to deteriorate, the debate over aid distribution and accountability remains a central issue. While some officials claim that Hamas is misappropriating resources, others argue that the focus should be on ensuring aid reaches those in need without political interference.
The situation underscores the complexity of the conflict and the challenges faced by all parties involved. With international attention on the crisis, the path forward remains uncertain, and the role of global actors in addressing the needs of the Palestinian population is under constant scrutiny.
