A train carrying 100 passengers has derailed in Germany, resulting in at least three fatalities and numerous injuries. The incident occurred on Sunday evening in a forested area near the town of Riedlingen, located in the southwestern state of Baden-Wurttemberg. This location is approximately 158 kilometers (98 miles) west of Munich.

Charlotte Ziller, the district fire chief, reported that the three victims included the train driver and an employee of Deutsche Bahn, the country's state-owned rail operator. She also mentioned that 50 people were injured, with 25 of them suffering serious injuries. Deutsche Bahn confirmed the deaths and the large number of injured individuals, stating that two train carriages had derailed for reasons yet to be determined.

Authorities are currently investigating the circumstances surrounding the accident. As part of this process, traffic has been suspended over a 40-kilometer (25-mile) stretch of the route. Thomas Strobl, the interior minister of Baden-Wurttemberg, noted that severe storms had swept through the region earlier, and investigators are considering whether heavy rains and potential landslides could have contributed to the crash.

The train was traveling from Sigmaringen to Ulm when it derailed. In response to the tragedy, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz expressed his condolences to the families of those killed. He emphasized his close communication with both the interior and transport ministers and requested that they provide emergency services with all necessary support.

Footage from the scene depicted yellow- and grey-colored train carriages lying on their sides as firefighters and emergency personnel worked to reach the passengers. According to local television station SWR, helicopters arrived shortly after the accident to transport the injured to nearby hospitals, while emergency doctors from nearby hospitals were also alerted.

Richard Lutz, the CEO of Deutsche Bahn, announced his intention to visit the site of the accident on Monday. He stated that the company was deeply shocked and dismayed by the event and thanked the emergency services and volunteers who responded to the incident. Lutz extended his heartfelt sympathy to the families of the deceased and wished the injured a swift recovery.

Deutsche Bahn has established a free special hotline for those affected by the accident and their relatives. Additionally, emergency chaplains and psychologists are available to support affected travelers and employees.

Germany's rail system often faces criticism from passengers due to its outdated infrastructure, leading to frequent delays and technical issues. The government has committed to investing several hundred billion euros over the next few years to modernize the infrastructure.

In June 2022, another train derailment occurred near a Bavarian Alpine resort, resulting in four deaths and numerous injuries. The deadliest rail accident in Germany took place in 1998 when a high-speed train operated by Deutsche Bahn derailed in Eschede, Lower Saxony, killing 101 people.

Despite these incidents, train travel in Germany remains significantly safer than traveling by car. According to Germany’s Federal Statistical Office, 2,770 people were killed in road crashes in 2024.
