Texas tops nation in veterans using VA education benefits

Veterans in Texas Take Advantage of Education Benefits
As the new school year approaches, students across the country will return to classrooms. Among them are tens of thousands of veterans who are utilizing the education benefits they earned through their service in the military. In Texas, the use of these benefits has reached record levels, making the state a leader in supporting veterans and their families.
According to the Texas Veterans Commission (TVC), recent data from the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) shows that Texas has more veterans using their VA education benefits than any other state in the nation. This includes both veterans and their dependents, with a total of 79,525 individuals currently benefiting from these programs. These numbers represent over half of the national total of 156,530 people using the G.I. Bill.
The TVC plays a critical role in helping veterans access these benefits. The organization works closely with veterans and their families to ensure they understand their options and can take full advantage of the educational opportunities available to them. One of the key programs supported by the TVC is the Survivors’ and Dependents’ Education Assistance (DEA) program. This program provides education benefits to dependents or surviving spouses of veterans who have died, been captured or missing, or have been determined to be permanently and totally disabled due to a service-connected cause.
Of the 79,525 Texans using veteran education benefits, 29,710 are enrolled in the DEA program. This highlights Texas’ leadership not only in the overall number of beneficiaries but also in the specific support provided to families of veterans.
Tom Palladino, Executive Director of the TVC and an Army veteran, emphasized the importance of education for veterans. “Education is essential to a better future and stronger workforce,” he said in a press release. “I’m proud that TVC Veterans Education has helped tens of thousands of students use the benefits they earned. The fact that Texas also leads the nation in veteran Survivors’ and Dependents’ Education Assistance shows the synergy within TVC.”
Support for Veterans on Campus
Local institutions like Austin Community College (ACC) are playing a vital role in supporting veterans as they transition into civilian life. ACC’s Veterans Resource Center is dedicated to assisting veterans, active-duty service members, and military families. The center offers a range of services, including academic advising, financial aid assistance, and career counseling.
In 2024, ACC was recognized by Gov. Greg Abbott’s office for its commitment to veterans. The college received a Veteran Education Excellence Recognition Gold Award, one of 21 Texas colleges to earn this distinction. Bethann Warwick, manager of the Veterans Resource Center at ACC, explained how the program supports military individuals from the moment they arrive on campus and continues to assist them throughout their academic journey and beyond.
“We connect with military individuals from the beginning of their time at the college and stay connected with them all the way through helping them find jobs after they finish school,” Warwick said. The program also includes a transition guide for first-time students, which helps them adjust from military life to civilian education. Additionally, ACC hosts events and activities that foster a sense of community among veterans and their families.
Texas: A State with a Strong Veteran Presence
Texas is home to the largest veteran population in the United States, with over 1.5 million veterans, according to the TVC. The state also has the highest number of disability compensation claims filed, with more than 300,000 claims since August 2022. This reflects the ongoing need for support and resources for veterans and their families.
Veterans in Texas can access free assistance through the TVC to help them file for and receive their benefits. Those seeking help with education benefits should reach out to the TVC’s Veterans Education Department. The organization provides guidance and support to ensure that veterans can fully utilize the opportunities available to them.
With continued efforts from organizations like the TVC and institutions such as ACC, Texas remains a strong advocate for veterans and their families, ensuring they have the tools needed to succeed in their educational and professional pursuits.
