A Strange Experience with a Tesla Robotaxi in Austin

A recent incident involving a Tesla Robotaxi in Austin, Texas, has once again brought attention to the challenges the company faces in launching its self-driving service. The event was captured by a popular YouTuber and longtime Tesla enthusiast, known as Ellie in Space, who documented her first experience with the ride-hailing electric vehicle on June 27. However, the trip did not go as planned.

Ellie and another passenger, who appeared to be a Tesla employee, were abruptly taken out of the vehicle after a call from a customer support representative. According to Ellie, the Model Y was not suitable for operation due to approaching bad weather. She also mentioned that the taxi had "randomly" entered a parking lot during the journey.

"I don't want to just be a Tesla rah-rah cheerleader," Ellie said. "It is very cool. However, this is a limitation currently how it is. You shouldn't have to terminate the service because it's about to rain."

Interestingly, the pair was able to hail another Robotaxi — the same one they had been asked to leave — but they returned to their starting point and did not continue to their destination.

Why This Matters

This incident highlights the growing concerns around the reliability and safety of Tesla’s Robotaxi service. Reports from various sources have detailed several issues, including sudden steering movements, unexpected braking near police cars, and even dangerous drop-offs in the middle of intersections. Despite Ellie and the apparent employee expressing positive feedback, the nearly 13-minute video included several moments that raised concerns rather than reassurance.

Ellie noted that her personal experience with Tesla’s Full Self-Driving software made her more comfortable with the Robotaxi service than she is with her own Tesla. However, there is little difference in the technology used, leading some viewers to question why she would trust the untested system and what her motivations might be.

During the video, the apparent employee listed the features of the ride and then claimed that the "safety observer" in the passenger seat could not control the vehicle without touching its display screen. Other early Robotaxi riders have reported similar experiences, where the observer’s hand was constantly on the door handle, and their thumb was seemingly on a button that, according to rumors, can immediately shut down the car.

Tesla’s Challenges and the Road Ahead

The rough start of the Robotaxi service aligns with Tesla’s broader struggles, as sales have declined and the stock has fallen, creating an uncertain outlook for the company. In early July, Tesla delivered 60,000 fewer vehicles between April and June compared to the same period last year, marking the largest decline in the company’s history.

Despite these challenges, CEO Elon Musk has positioned the Robotaxi service as the future of Tesla. While autonomous taxis that do not produce emissions seem like an ideal solution for saving money and reducing greenhouse gas emissions, Tesla still has a long way to go.

Waymo, a competitor in the self-driving space, is far ahead of Tesla, offering a safer — though still imperfect — service available in cities such as Austin, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Phoenix, and Atlanta. To catch up, Tesla must overcome regulatory hurdles and improve its technology. Unlike Waymo, which uses lidar and radar in addition to cameras, Tesla’s FSD and other driver-assist software rely solely on cameras. As demonstrated by another YouTuber, this creates a gap in how the vehicles respond to safety hazards, such as children getting off buses or encountering a Wile E. Coyote-style wall.

Public Trust in Self-Driving Cars

The question of whether people would trust a self-driving car on a busy city street remains open. Opinions vary widely, with some people feeling confident, while others are hesitant. The answer often depends on the brand and the specific situation.

As Tesla continues to refine its Robotaxi service, public perception will play a crucial role in its success. For now, the road ahead remains uncertain, filled with both promise and significant challenges.
