Superman Remains the Top Comic Book Movie of 2025

Superman has continued to dominate the box office in 2025, maintaining its position as the highest-grossing comic book movie in North America. Despite the release of several highly anticipated films, including Fantastic Four: First Steps, Captain America: Brave New World, and Thunderbolts, Superman has remained at the top of the charts.

The film opened with an impressive $125 million in its first weekend, setting a new record for the biggest debut of any comic book movie in the year. This figure not only outperformed other major releases but also solidified Superman's place as a leading force in the superhero genre.

Fantastic Four: First Steps Makes a Strong Debut

While Superman led the way, Fantastic Four: First Steps came close with a strong opening of $118 million. The film surprised many by exceeding expectations, proving that there is still a significant audience for new superhero stories. It also set a high bar for preview screenings, earning $2.8 million from early Tuesday previews and a total of $22.5 million from all preview events, which was the highest for any film in 2025 until it was surpassed by another title a few days later.

On its opening day, Fantastic Four earned $57 million, making it the second-largest opening day of the year, just behind A Minecraft Movie. The film went on to gross $118 million during its opening weekend and added another $218 million globally.

Other Superhero Films Have Mixed Results

Not all superhero films had the same level of success. Captain America: Brave New World managed to earn $415.1 million worldwide, with $200.5 million in the U.S. and Canada and $214.6 million internationally. However, this fell short of the estimated $425 million needed to break even, considering its $180 million production budget and marketing costs.

The film had a strong opening, earning $40 million on its first day, including $12 million from previews. It debuted with $88.5 million for the weekend and reached $100 million in its first four days. However, it experienced a sharp decline in its second weekend, dropping by 68%, one of the worst drops for a Marvel film in recent years.

Thunderbolts also faced challenges. It opened with $31.5 million on its first day, including $11.5 million from previews. Its weekend total was $74.3 million domestically and $86.1 million overseas, bringing its total to $160.1 million by the end of its debut weekend. Kevin Feige, president of Marvel Studios, acknowledged that some fans may have been confused about whether they needed to watch MCU shows on Disney+ before seeing the film. He admitted, “We should have made it clearer that watching the shows wasn’t necessary.”

Global Performance and Market Trends

Superman’s international success was also notable, with an estimated $95 million earned during its opening weekend. Its biggest overseas markets included the UK, Mexico, China, Brazil, Australia, France, Korea, India, Spain, and Japan. However, the film did not perform as strongly in certain regions, such as China, where it opened in fourth place.

Despite these fluctuations, Superman has continued to hold onto the number one spot in terms of both opening weekend and total domestic gross. With a strong debut and consistent performance throughout the summer, it has emerged as the leader in 2025’s competitive superhero landscape.

As the year progresses, it will be interesting to see how other films perform and whether any of them can challenge Superman’s dominance. For now, the Man of Steel remains the top draw at the box office.
