Scott Riccardi's 16-Day Jeopardy Streak Ends Unexpectedly

A Historic Win and an Unforgettable Ending
Scott Riccardi has etched his name into the Jeopardy! record books, but his remarkable journey on the show might be remembered more for how it ended than for the achievements that led up to it. The iconic game show has consistently captivated audiences over the years, especially when contestants manage to extend their winning streaks and accumulate impressive sums of money.
Riccardi's run was particularly notable, as he managed to secure the year’s record for the most games won by a player. Many fans were hoping he would surpass the records set by James Holzhauer and Amy Schneider. However, what made Riccardi's story even more intriguing was the dramatic and unexpected way in which his streak came to an end.
On the Friday, July 25 episode of the show, which marked the season finale before a brief hiatus and new episodes in the fall, Riccardi aimed to extend his winning streak to 17 games. Unfortunately, this goal was not realized as he faced an unexpected defeat at the hands of newcomer Jonathan Hugendubler.
Despite starting strong and maintaining an early lead, Riccardi struggled during the Final Jeopardy round. Entering the final category, Riccardi had a total of $23,600, while Hugendubler was in second place with $14,000, and Charlotte Cooper was in third with $7,800. The final category was titled “20th Century Names,” with the clue reading, “According to one obituary, in 1935 he owed 13 magazines, 8 radio stations, 2 movie companies and $56 million in real estate.”
Both Hugendubler and Cooper correctly guessed “Who is Hearst.” With their wagers, they finished the game with $15,600 and $23,601 respectively. However, Riccardi's guess was incorrect, and he wagered too much, dropping his total to $18,600. This loss officially crowned Hugendubler as the new champion.
The moment was met with shock in the studio, as audience members gasped audibly, Hugendubler appeared stunned, and Riccardi remained composed. Fans on social media were equally taken aback, especially because the event took place on the final episode of the season. Many believed this was the first time a superchampion had lost on the last day of the season.
One fan wrote, “No one expected this ending to a season! But we’ll see Scott in the Tournament of Champions.” Another said, “Holy s–t. The first time a superchampion has lost on the last day of the season. What a way to wrap it up, congrats Jonathan!!”
Although Riccardi's journey on the show has come to an end, his legacy as a superchampion will not be forgotten. He now holds the record for the most consecutive games won by a contestant since 2022 and ties 10th overall in Jeopardy! history alongside Ryan Long.
Other notable streaks include David Madden (2005) and Jason Zuffranieri (2019), who each had 19 games; Julia Colling (2014) with 20 games; Cris Pannullo (2022) with 21 games; Mattea Roach (2022) with 23 games; James Holzhauer (2019) with 32 games; Matt Amodio (2021) with 38 games; Amy Schneider (2022) with 40 games; and host Ken Jennings, who achieved an unbeatable 74-game streak in 2004.
Riccardi also currently holds the eighth place spot for highest winnings in regular season play with $455,000. Those above him include Jason Zuffranieri with $532,496, Mattea Roach with $560,983, Cris Pannullo with $748,286, Amy Schneider with $1,382,800, Matt Amodio with $1,518,601, James Holzhauer with $2,462,216, and Ken Jennings with $2,520,700.
