Sandy Barbour's New Chapter as Interim Athletic Director at Utah State

Sandy Barbour, a seasoned leader in collegiate athletics, has taken on a new role as the interim athletic director at Utah State University. This marks her fourth position as an athletic director, showcasing her extensive experience and adaptability in the field. Barbour’s journey began with her tenure at Penn State, where she served from 2014 to 2022, followed by stints at the University of California (Cal), Tulane University, and Notre Dame.

Barbour initially stated that Penn State would be her final stop, but circumstances have led her to take on this new challenge. Her appointment comes after a series of changes at Utah State, including the departure of previous athletic director Diana Sabau, who moved to the University of Maryland. With her arrival, Barbour will face the task of guiding Utah State through its transition from the Mountain West Conference to the Pac-12, starting in 2026.

A Legacy of Leadership and Accomplishments

During her time at Penn State, Barbour played a pivotal role in several successful programs. She oversaw national championships in women’s volleyball, women’s soccer, and wrestling. Notably, she hired Katie Schumacher-Cawley to lead the women’s volleyball program, which recently secured its eighth national title. Schumacher-Cawley was also honored with the Jimmy V Perseverance Award at the ESPYs for her battle with cancer.

Barbour also made significant decisions that impacted the football program. She secured a 10-year contract extension for head coach James Franklin, worth over $75 million, which is set to run through 2031. The contract includes a buyout clause that could cost Penn State up to $40 million if Franklin were to leave in 2026, with a reduction of $8 million each subsequent year.

Transition and New Opportunities

After leaving Penn State in 2022, Barbour joined Huron, a consulting firm that provides strategic advice to universities and athletic departments. Her work with Huron included collaboration with notable figures such as Jim Delany, Kevin Wieberg, and Kevin White. Now, Barbour is bringing her expertise to Utah State, where she will assist in the search for a permanent athletic director.

Utah State’s interim president, Alan Smith, highlighted the value of Barbour’s experience and the support of Huron in navigating the challenges of transitioning to the Pac-12. The university plans to begin a national search for a full-time athletic director in August, with Barbour and other stakeholders playing a key role in shaping the qualifications and expectations for the next AD.

Building a Stronger Future for Utah State Athletics

Barbour will work alongside Utah State alumnus Doug Fiefia to form a committee that will provide recommendations on essential job qualifications for the next athletic director. This group will also focus on how the AD can engage with stakeholders and advance the mission of USU athletics. The committee aims to complete its work by early August, paving the way for the official search for a permanent leader.

As Barbour steps into her new role, she brings a wealth of knowledge and a proven track record of success. Her leadership will be crucial in guiding Utah State through this important transition and ensuring continued excellence in its athletic programs.
