Escalation of Attacks in Ukraine

Russian military forces have intensified their attacks on civilian infrastructure in Ukraine, with glide bombs and ballistic missiles striking a prison and a medical facility overnight. These strikes resulted in at least 27 deaths across the country, according to officials. Despite President Trump's recent warning that Russia could face sanctions and tariffs if it does not halt its actions, the violence continues.

In the southeastern Zaporizhzhia region, four powerful Russian glide bombs hit a prison, killing at least 16 inmates and injuring over 90 others. The Justice Ministry of Ukraine reported the incident, highlighting the devastating impact on the facility. In the Dnipro region, Russian missiles partially destroyed a three-story building and damaged nearby medical facilities, including a maternity hospital and a city hospital ward. At least three people were killed, including a 23-year-old pregnant woman, and two others were killed elsewhere in the region.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky stated that Russian strikes targeted 73 cities, towns, and villages overnight. He emphasized that these were deliberate attacks, not accidents. Zelensky’s remarks underscored the ongoing challenges faced by Ukrainian civilians amid the conflict.

Trump's Ultimatum to Putin

President Trump has given Russian President Vladimir Putin 10 days to stop the killing in Ukraine, shortening his previous 50-day deadline. This move signals Trump's desire for progress in peace efforts by August 8. Trump has criticized Putin for continuing to bomb Ukrainian civilians despite discussions about ending the war. However, the Kremlin has not changed its approach.

During a visit to Scotland, Trump expressed disappointment in Putin, while Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov stated that Russia is determined to achieve its goals in Ukraine. Peskov also mentioned that Moscow is committed to seeking a peaceful solution, though the Kremlin remains defiant.

Zelensky welcomed Trump's decision, emphasizing the global need for peace. However, the Kremlin pushed back against Trump's ultimatum, with former President Dmitry Medvedev warning against "playing the ultimatum game with Russia." He noted that each new ultimatum is a threat and a step toward war, not just between Russia and Ukraine but with the United States itself.

International Reactions and Concerns

The Institute for the Study of War, a Washington-based think tank, highlighted that the Kremlin continues to frame Russia as being in direct confrontation with the West. This narrative aims to generate domestic support for the war in Ukraine and future aggression against NATO.

Ukrainian air force reported that Russia launched two Iskander-M ballistic missiles along with 37 Shahed-type strike drones and decoys. Of these, 32 Shahed drones were intercepted or neutralized by Ukrainian air defenses. The attack near midnight hit the Bilenkivska Correctional Facility with glide bombs, which are Soviet-era bombs retrofitted with guidance systems.

These glide bombs, carrying up to 6,600 pounds of explosives, have been causing significant damage in eastern Ukraine. The attack on the prison resulted in at least 42 inmates being hospitalized and 40 others, including one staff member, sustaining various injuries. The prison’s dining hall was destroyed, and administrative and quarantine buildings were damaged, though no escapes were reported.

Ongoing Conflict and Civilian Impact

Russian forces also targeted a grocery store in the northeastern Kharkiv region, killing five and wounding three civilians. In the southern Kherson region, one civilian was killed and three wounded over the last 24 hours. Alongside these attacks, Russia continues its grinding war of attrition, which has led to heavy losses in troop numbers and military hardware.

The Russian Defense Ministry claimed that troops captured the villages of Novoukrainka in the Donetsk region and Temyrivka in the Zaporizhzhia region. Meanwhile, Ukraine has sought to counter Russian strikes by developing long-range drone technology, targeting oil depots, weapons plants, and disrupting commercial flights.

Russia’s Defense Ministry reported that air defenses downed 74 Ukrainian drones over several regions, including 43 over the Bryansk region. A drone attack in Rostov region resulted in the death of a man in Salsk, starting a fire at the Salsk railway station. Explosions shattered windows in a passenger train, leading to the evacuation of passengers.

As the conflict continues, the human cost and destruction remain high, with both sides accusing each other of escalating the violence. The international community watches closely as tensions rise and the situation becomes increasingly dire.
