Russia Kills 27 Civilians in Ukraine as Kremlin Defies Trump's Threats

Escalation of Attacks in Ukraine
Russian military forces have launched a series of attacks on civilian infrastructure across Ukraine, resulting in significant casualties and damage. Overnight, glide bombs and ballistic missiles targeted a prison and a medical facility, leading to at least 27 deaths nationwide. These strikes have raised concerns about the ongoing conflict's impact on non-combatants.
In the southeastern Zaporizhzhia region, four powerful Russian glide bombs struck a prison, according to local authorities. The attack resulted in the death of at least 16 inmates and injured more than 90 others. The Justice Ministry of Ukraine reported that the prison’s dining hall was destroyed, with administrative and quarantine buildings also damaged. No prisoners escaped, as the perimeter fence remained intact.
In the Dnipro region, Russian missiles caused extensive damage to a three-story building, including nearby medical facilities such as a maternity hospital and a city hospital ward. At least three people were killed, including a 23-year-old pregnant woman. Additional casualties were reported in other parts of the region, highlighting the widespread nature of the attacks.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky described the attacks as deliberate and conscious strikes against cities, towns, and villages across the country. He emphasized that these actions are not accidental but part of a broader strategy to undermine Ukrainian resilience.
International Reactions and Diplomatic Tensions
Despite the escalating violence, U.S. President Donald Trump has issued an ultimatum to Russian President Vladimir Putin, giving him 10 days to halt the attacks in Ukraine. This move shortens a previous 50-day deadline and reflects growing pressure from the international community for a resolution to the conflict.
Trump criticized Putin for continuing to target civilians while discussing the possibility of ending the war. However, the Kremlin has maintained its stance, with Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov stating that Russia is committed to achieving its goals in Ukraine. Peskov also mentioned that Moscow has noted Trump’s statement and remains open to peaceful solutions.
Zelensky welcomed the shortened deadline, emphasizing the global need for peace. However, the Kremlin pushed back, with former President Dmitry Medvedev warning against what he called “playing the ultimatum game with Russia.” He suggested that each new ultimatum could escalate tensions and lead to further conflict.
Ongoing Conflict and Military Tactics
Since the full-scale invasion of Ukraine, Russia has continued to target civilian infrastructure, drawing accusations of war crimes. Ukrainian officials have condemned these attacks, citing international conventions that prohibit targeting non-military sites.
The conflict has also seen the use of advanced military technology, including Iskander-M ballistic missiles and Shahed-type drones. Ukrainian air defenses have managed to intercept many of these threats, though the attacks continue to cause significant damage.
In addition to the strikes on prisons and medical facilities, Russian forces have targeted a grocery store in the Kharkiv region, killing five civilians and wounding three others. In the Kherson region, one person was killed and three others injured over the past 24 hours.
Ukraine's Counter-Offensive Efforts
Ukraine has been working to develop its own long-range drone technology as a means of countering Russian attacks. These efforts have included strikes on oil depots, weapons plants, and disruptions to commercial flights. However, Russian air defenses have intercepted numerous Ukrainian drones, with reports indicating that 74 were shot down overnight.
A drone attack in the Rostov region resulted in the death of a man in Salsk and caused fires at the Salsk railway station. The incident led to the suspension of railway traffic through the area, with explosions damaging passenger trains and prompting evacuations.
As the conflict continues, both sides remain entrenched in their positions, with no clear resolution in sight. The human toll and destruction continue to mount, underscoring the urgent need for diplomatic intervention and de-escalation efforts.
