Police Ambushed in NE Ohio; Suspect Dead

Three Officers Shot in Lorain, Ohio
On Wednesday afternoon, three officers from the Lorain Police Department were shot in a shocking incident that has left the community in shock. The event marked the first major police shooting in the city in 70 years, according to Acting Police Chief Michael Failing.
The attack occurred when two officers, 35-year-old Phillip Wagner and 51-year-old Peter Gale, were parked side-by-side in their patrol cars to have lunch at a dead-end location on Missouri Avenue in an industrial area. A gunman, described as having an “arsenal of weapons,” opened fire on them. A third officer, 47-year-old Brent Payne, who responded to assist, was also shot during the incident.
Wagner and Payne sustained multiple gunshot wounds and were transported by air to a Cleveland hospital, where they remained under treatment. Gale suffered a hand injury and was treated locally in Lorain.
Response from Law Enforcement and Officials
After the shooting, more officers arrived on the scene to help transport the injured officers to safety. Chief Failing emphasized the bravery of the responding officers, stating that they rushed into a "hail of gunfire" to assist their colleagues.
Jay McDonald, president of the Ohio Fraternal Order of Police, praised the actions of the officers, noting that many ran toward danger to help their fellow law enforcement members. Mayor Jack Bradley expressed his support for the affected officers and the community, stating that while it was a tragic day, the city would continue to move forward with strength and unity.
Governor Mike DeWine and U.S. Senator Jon Husted reached out to the mayor, offering their support and solidarity.
Investigation Underway
Elyria Police are leading the investigation into the shooting, with assistance from the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation. Police Chief James Welsh indicated that the suspect ambushed the officers using a high-powered rifle. He could not confirm whether the suspect was killed by officers or took his own life.
Welsh stated that authorities believe they have identified the suspect, whose last known address was in Lorain. However, he declined to release the individual’s name. The suspect is believed to be the sole person involved in the shooting.
The area around the incident was deemed safe, with multiple tactical teams conducting searches. Authorities confirmed that there was no public threat, despite controlled detonations conducted by the Lorain County Bomb Squad.
Explosives were found in the suspect’s vehicle at the scene, and several suspicious items were detonated. Additionally, suspicious items were removed from the suspect’s home on North Lakeview Boulevard.
Community Impact and Calls for Unity
The shooting has had a significant impact on the local community and law enforcement. McDonald highlighted that 166 Ohio police officers were shot in the first six months of 2025, calling for the community to unite in condemning violence against law enforcement.
He emphasized the dedication of officers who risk their lives daily to protect others, often without knowing the people they serve.
Ongoing Efforts and Support
Anyone with information about the shooting is encouraged to contact Elyria Police at 440-323-3302. The department is working closely with state agencies to ensure a thorough investigation.
As the community continues to process this tragedy, the focus remains on supporting the injured officers and ensuring the safety of all residents. Local leaders and law enforcement officials have pledged to work together to prevent such incidents in the future.
