Zakk Wylde Reflects on His Final Moments with Ozzy Osbourne

Zakk Wylde has shared a heartfelt account of his final interaction with the legendary Ozzy Osbourne, revealing how their connection continued even after their last performance together. The conversation took place during an interview with Guitar World, where Wylde reflected on the emotional and meaningful moments that defined their relationship.

A Lasting Message from Ozzy

Wylde recounted the final text message he received from Ozzy before the singer’s passing. He explained that during the Back to the Beginning concert, there was a lot of activity backstage, and many people were eager to speak with Ozzy. Wylde decided to give him space, thinking they would have more time to connect later. However, the last message he received from Ozzy was one of apology and gratitude.

“He said, ‘Zakky, sorry, it was like a madhouse back there. I didn’t see you.’ He goes, ‘Thanks for everything.’ It was just us talking, saying, ‘I love you, buddy.’ That was it,” Wylde shared. This simple yet profound exchange encapsulated the deep bond between the two musicians.

Memories from the Back to the Beginning Concert

The last time Wylde saw Ozzy in person was during the Back to the Beginning concert on July 7. He described the night as unforgettable, with vivid memories etched in his mind. One particular moment stood out during the performance of “Mama, I’m Coming Home.” Wylde had to adjust his position near the microphone to support Ozzy’s vocals, which were struggling at certain points.

“I had to be like, ‘Keep the guitar away from the microphone so I can sing,’ because Oz’s voice was having trouble at certain notes,” he recalled. “I was like, ‘I need to make sure I’m always there so I can double him.’ I was like three feet away from the microphone when I started playing the song. I was like, ‘I gotta get near the microphone,’ so I had to almost stop playing, lift the guitar up and put it over the mic.”

Wylde compared the experience to juggling chainsaws on a skateboard, highlighting the chaotic yet exhilarating nature of the event. Despite the challenges, he emphasized that it was a moment of pure musical expression and camaraderie.

Ozzy’s Impact on Wylde’s Career

Beyond the stage, Wylde spoke about the profound influence Ozzy had on his life and career. He described music as the light that guided him through difficult times, stating that without Ozzy, he might have continued playing, but not with the same purpose.

“If I didn’t have Oz, without a doubt, I’d continue playing… but it’s how Ozzy would say what The Beatles did for him, you know? What he gave me with Sabbath, and then with Randy [Rhoads] and Jake [E. Lee], it’s a beacon of light. It gives you purpose,” Wylde said. He also likened Ozzy to an older brother, sharing stories of their friendship, including late-night conversations and advice on life's important lessons.

A Final Performance and Legacy

At the July 5 Back to the Beginning concert, Wylde joined Ozzy for the penultimate set of the night. The performance featured a five-song solo set by Ozzy, including “I Don’t Know,” “Mr. Crowley,” “Suicide Solution,” “Mama I’m Coming Home,” and “Crazy Train.” This marked one of the final performances of Ozzy’s career, and he passed away 17 days later.

Ozzy Osbourne, who was 76 at the time of his death, left behind a legacy that continues to inspire fans and fellow musicians alike. Tributes from the rock and metal community have poured in, celebrating his contributions to music and his impact on countless lives.
