NYPD Seeks Clues in Las Vegas Shooting

New York Mayor Eric Adams Addresses Las Vegas Shooter's Background
New York Mayor Eric Adams recently announced that the New York Police Department (NYPD) has deployed officers to the Las Vegas home of a former Santa Clarita Valley resident, identified as the shooter in a tragic Midtown Manhattan shooting. The incident, which occurred the day before, resulted in the deaths of five individuals, including the suspect himself.
The NYPD has shared several details about Shane Devon Tamura, a 27-year-old former Golden Valley High School student who died by suicide after fatally shooting a police officer and three others at 345 Park Ave. During a news conference, officials suggested that the attack may have been linked to Tamura’s ongoing mental health struggles. Subsequent media reports highlighted prescription medication found on his body, along with notes indicating he blamed the NFL for his mental health issues.
The 645-foot-tall skyscraper where the shooting took place is home to several major organizations, including Blackstone, Rudin Management, and the National Football League. In an interview with CBS, Mayor Adams revealed that officers reported Tamura believed he had chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE), a brain injury associated with repeated head trauma often seen in contact sports like football. Adams noted that Tamura had a note on him suggesting he felt he had CTE, a known condition among those involved in contact sports.
A Star on the Football Field
Tamura was once a standout athlete at Golden Valley High School, where he played as a running back. His impact on the team was significant, particularly during the 2014 season when he helped boost the offense. Dan Kelley, the head coach of the varsity football team at the time, credited Tamura for scoring more than half of the team’s touchdowns during that season.
In a 2014 story, fans expressed disappointment when Tamura didn’t make big plays, but Kelley emphasized his value as a game-breaker. “He’s even harder on himself when he doesn’t take it all the way,” Kelley said. “I always have to remind him that not every play is going to go for a touchdown.”
Tamura’s talent was evident, with 774 rushing yards and 11 touchdowns during his junior year. He also contributed 103 receiving yards and a receiving touchdown, showcasing his versatility. His teammate, junior quarterback Victor Corona, highlighted Tamura’s importance to the team, stating that having him to lean on was crucial during a challenging start to the season.
Despite his success, Tamura left Golden Valley High School during the 2014-2015 school year, transferring to Granada Hills Charter High School for his senior year. It appears this may have been the last time he played football.
The Tragic Shooting Incident
Mayor Adams mentioned that officers believe Tamura mistakenly took the wrong elevator, possibly intending to reach the NFL headquarters located in the building. Instead, he ended up in the offices of Rudin Management, where he carried out additional shootings. The five victims, including Tamura, were:
- Julie Hyman, an employee of Rudin Management
- NYPD Officer Didarul Islam
- Wesley LePatner, a senior managing director at Blackstone
- Aland Etienne, a security officer
In response to the tragedy, Mayor Adams ordered flags across city buildings and stationary flagstaffs throughout the five boroughs to be lowered to half-staff as a mark of respect for the victims, especially Officer Didarul Islam.
NFL’s Response
NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell issued a statement to all league employees following the incident. According to the message shared on X, one of the league’s employees was seriously injured in the attack. While the employee’s identity was not disclosed, Goodell confirmed they were in stable condition and receiving support from NFL staff and their family.
“The building has nearly been cleared, and we believe all of our employees are otherwise safe and accounted for,” Goodell stated. The NFL has since been working to ensure the safety and well-being of its staff while investigating the incident.
As the investigation continues, the community remains in mourning, reflecting on the life of a young man whose path took a tragic turn.
