New Clues Emerge in Murders of U.S. Citizens in Border Cities

Authorities in the Mexican state of Chihuahua have reportedly uncovered significant leads in the recent killings of U.S. citizens in border cities such as Juarez and Ojinaga. These incidents have raised concerns among local communities and law enforcement, especially given the proximity to the U.S. border.

One of the victims was 20-year-old Alan Valenzuela from Presidio, Texas. According to a statement from the Presidio County Sheriff’s Office, Valenzuela and his friends were at a local establishment in Ojinaga when he was caught in crossfire. The incident has left many questions unanswered about how and why it happened, particularly since the area is frequently visited by residents and tourists from Presidio.

Criminal Activity Linked to Drug Cartels

The situation has become more complex with the involvement of drug cartels. On Monday, Chihuahua Public Safety Director Gilberto Loya mentioned that several members of a criminal group arrested on drug and weapons charges are under investigation for their possible connection to the July 6 shooting that led to Valenzuela's death. The group, known as Los Cabrera, includes one of its leaders, and their arrest has prompted increased police patrols in Ojinaga and near the Chihuahua City prison where they are being held.

Loya highlighted the ongoing violence generated by these groups in towns like Aldama, Ojinaga, and Coyame. He emphasized that authorities are closely monitoring the region to prevent any attempts to free the arrested individuals. Over the past five years, Sinaloa cartel cells and their rivals, La Linea, have been engaged in a violent struggle over drug and migrant smuggling routes south of Presidio. This conflict has previously resulted in the disappearance and presumed death of 13 migrants in 2021, with their remains found in a mass grave in 2023.

Kidnapping and Homicide Cases Continue to Plague the Region

In another troubling development, the Chihuahua Attorney General’s Office reported the discovery of a young woman’s remains in Juarez on July 22. The body, buried two feet underground, was found during a kidnapping investigation. The victim, believed to be between 15 and 20 years old, had a robust build, tattoos, and a belly ring. State investigators told Border Report that they suspect the victim was a 17-year-old from New Mexico who was visiting a friend in Juarez and was kidnapped by a criminal gang.

According to the Attorney General’s Office, the girl left her home in New Mexico on July 16, and three days later, her family received ransom demands through a social media app. The kidnappers sent photos and videos to confirm their possession of the victim. It is unclear what happened afterward, but the office stated that the girl was strangled and her body was buried.

Loya emphasized that the case is still under investigation and that while there is important information, it has not been disclosed publicly. He also noted that organized criminals in Juarez have targeted migrants for kidnappings during surges in recent years. However, after the traffic decreased following President Trump's administration, the gangs shifted their focus to targeting people in Juarez.

Shift in Targeting Strategies

Loya explained that in May and June, this crime pattern changed, with the targets no longer being primarily migrants. He added that in most cases, arrests have been made, leading to a reduction in kidnappings to zero before the American girl’s case. However, the recent incident has reignited fears in the community.

The July 22 report did not name the teenaged victim, but Mexican news outlets have identified her as D.C.L.G., a resident of Hobbs, New Mexico. Authorities have made arrests in multiple kidnapping cases involving both migrants and Juarez residents, indicating a broader trend of criminal activity in the region.

As the investigations continue, the community remains on high alert, hoping for clarity and justice in these tragic events. The ongoing efforts by law enforcement highlight the challenges faced in addressing the complex web of criminal activity along the U.S.-Mexico border.
