In an interview during a panel at the Mediterrane Film Festival, Watts shared how the unexpected involvement of Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield’s versions of Peter Parker was altered due to fan predictions.

Initially, the plan was for the older Spider-Men to appear in a scene where Tom Holland’s Peter is grieving the loss of his Aunt May. However, Watts discovered that fans had already anticipated this moment through fan art and discussions on platforms like Reddit. This led to a last-minute change in the storyline, as the director wanted to keep the audience guessing and avoid predictable twists.

Watts explained that he had a general idea of when the other Spider-Men would join Holland’s character. But after seeing fan art depicting a specific scene—a rooftop setting with two Doctor Strange portals opening and the two Spider-Men stepping out—he realized that the surprise element was compromised.

“I was like, 'Well, we can't do that. If that's exactly what everyone thinks we're going to do, we absolutely can't do that.'” Watts said, emphasizing the importance of maintaining suspense for the audience.

Instead of the original plan, the scene was reimagined to involve Ned, played by Jacob Batalon, accidentally summoning the older Spider-Men in his family home. This twist caught fans off guard, as there was no widespread fan art predicting this outcome.

To mislead the audience, the production brought in Mary Rivera, who plays Ned’s grandmother, to help create an unexpected setting. Watts described the decision to change the location as a “double-cross” on the audience.
