Four individuals lost their lives when a gunman entered a high-rise building in Midtown Manhattan on Monday evening. The incident occurred at 345 Park Avenue, a prominent skyscraper housing offices for several major corporations. Among the victims were an off-duty NYPD officer, a security guard, a Blackstone executive, and a Rudin Management employee. A fifth person was injured and hospitalized in critical condition.

The suspect, identified as 27-year-old Shane Tamura, died by self-inflicted gunshot wound on the 33rd floor of the building. Authorities are investigating the motive behind the attack, which has left the city reeling from the loss of multiple lives.

Background on the Suspect

Tamura, a resident of Las Vegas, had previously worked an overnight security job at Horseshoe Las Vegas. According to New York City Mayor Eric Adams, law enforcement is currently conducting a search warrant at Tamura’s home to determine how he obtained the AR-15-style rifle used in the shooting. Investigators believe that Tamura assembled the weapon using a lower receiver purchased from an associate.

The motive remains unclear, but officials have indicated that Tamura may have had a grievance against the National Football League (NFL). However, it appears he mistakenly entered the wrong elevator bank, leading to the tragic outcome.

Victims and Their Impact

Among those killed was Officer Didarul Islam, a 33-year-old NYPD officer from the Bronx. He was an immigrant from Bangladesh and had served in the department for about three and a half years. At the time of the shooting, he was working as a private security guard at the building. His wife is pregnant with their third child.

NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch expressed deep sorrow over the loss, calling Islam “a brother, a friend, and an NYPD hero.” She emphasized the risks officers face daily and the importance of continuing the investigation to find answers.

Another victim was Wesley LePatner, a 43-year-old senior executive at Blackstone Group. LePatner was described as a respected leader who had spent over a decade at Goldman Sachs before joining Blackstone. Blackstone released a statement honoring LePatner, calling her “brilliant, passionate, warm, and generous.” The company expressed its condolences to her family and other victims.

Aland Etienne, a security officer and member of the Service Employees International Union (SEIU), was also among the deceased. Etienne’s brother shared a heartfelt message on social media, describing him as a father, son, and a light in their lives.

Rudin Management Company confirmed that one of its employees was killed in the incident. The company expressed deep grief and gratitude for the swift response from emergency services.

Details of the Attack

At approximately 6:28 p.m., multiple 911 calls were made reporting an active shooter inside 345 Park Avenue. According to police, Tamura exited a black BMW with Nevada plates, carrying an M4 rifle. Security footage showed him entering the lobby, opening fire on an NYPD officer, and then shooting a woman seeking cover.

He proceeded to the elevator bank, where he shot a security guard. A fifth individual was injured during the attack. Tamura eventually made his way to the 33rd floor, where he fired rounds before taking his own life.

Law enforcement is analyzing Tamura’s vehicle travel history, which included a cross-country journey through Colorado, Nebraska, and Iowa before arriving in New York. Officials also mentioned that Tamura had a documented mental health history.

Mayor Adams revealed that Tamura allegedly wrote a suicide note expressing beliefs about chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) and grievances with the NFL. However, investigators noted that Tamura played football in high school but never in the NFL.
