Unexpected Evacuation at Denver International Airport

Passengers and crew members found themselves in a tense situation when an American Airlines flight had to be evacuated at Denver International Airport on Saturday. The incident occurred as the plane was preparing for its journey to Miami, and it turned into a chaotic but ultimately successful evacuation.

According to reports, the Boeing 737 MAX was on the runway, accelerating for takeoff around 2:45 p.m. when something went wrong. Mark Tsurkis, one of the passengers, described the moment as "chaos." He recounted how the plane was moving at speeds over 150 miles per hour when they heard a loud boom from underneath the aircraft.

American Airlines attributed the incident to a maintenance issue involving one of the plane’s tires. The airline confirmed that 173 passengers and six crew members were evacuated after the landing gear problem occurred during departure.

Tsurkis was among the first to leave the plane and captured video of the evacuation. He described how people were carrying luggage and sliding down emergency slides, some with children in their arms. “After 20 to 30 seconds, the plane stopped, and a smell of smoke started to come out,” he said. “Then someone screamed ‘fire.’”

Denver Fire Department responded quickly and extinguished the fire. One passenger was taken to the hospital with a minor injury. Tsurkis explained that the crew gave instructions to open emergency doors and use the inflatable slides. However, many passengers ignored the advice and took their luggage with them, which slowed down the process.

Despite the alarming event, Tsurkis managed to catch his flight to Miami about seven hours later. He was supporting a friend in a Judo competition. “They actually had to bring a plane from DFW just for us,” he said. Tsurkis expressed gratitude for the pilot and crew, calling their actions “amazing” and acknowledging that they saved the day for everyone involved.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is currently investigating the incident to determine the exact cause of the tire-related issue. American Airlines released a statement thanking its crew for their quick response and apologizing to affected customers.

Tsurkis shared his thoughts on what should be done in similar emergencies. He encouraged people to prioritize human lives over material possessions. “It doesn’t make sense,” he said. “Human lives are much more important than material things.”

This incident serves as a reminder of the importance of following safety protocols during emergencies. While the situation was stressful, the outcome was positive, and no serious injuries were reported. It also highlights the critical role of well-trained crews and the need for passengers to adhere to evacuation instructions.

As the investigation continues, the aviation community will likely review procedures to prevent similar incidents in the future. For now, the focus remains on ensuring the safety and well-being of all travelers.
