Lakers Secure Marcus Smart in Major Free Agency Move

The Los Angeles Lakers made a significant move in free agency by securing the services of former NBA Defensive Player of the Year, Marcus Smart. This acquisition came at the expense of their biggest market rival, the New York Knicks, who had also shown interest in the three-time All-Defensive guard.

According to reports, the Knicks reached out to Smart before he ultimately decided to sign with the Lakers. However, they were unable to offer him the role he was seeking. Additionally, the Knicks are constrained by their salary cap limitations, only able to offer Smart a veteran minimum contract.

Smart, who began his career with the Boston Celtics, signed a two-year, $11 million deal with the Lakers after clearing waivers following a buyout with the Washington Wizards. The deal includes a player option for the second year, giving Smart some flexibility in his future.
