Kansas City Man Faces Charges in Sunday Slaying of Two Brothers

Kansas City Man Charged in Shooting Death of Two Brothers
A 27-year-old man from Kansas City is facing serious charges following the fatal shooting of two brothers at a convenience store. The incident occurred on Sunday, July 20, and has led to criminal charges against Emmanuel Hernandez, who is now accused of voluntary manslaughter and armed criminal action.
The shooting took place near Truman Avenue and Brooklyn Street. The victims have been identified as Taylor Garrett, 32, and Byron Garrett, 35. According to court documents, Kansas City police responded to a report of a shooting just before 1:20 p.m. Upon arrival, officers found both men with apparent gunshot wounds and pronounced them dead at the scene.
Witnesses reported seeing two men engaged in a conversation, followed by one slapping the other. Shortly after, one individual pulled out a gun and began shooting. The details provided by the witness suggest that the confrontation escalated quickly into violence.
Hernandez told detectives that he had stopped at the gas station to purchase fuel. As he approached the front door, he claimed he was attacked by Taylor Garrett. He described being struck repeatedly on his head and face, feeling as though he might lose consciousness. According to court documents, the second victim, Byron Garrett, was present during the altercation.
Hernandez stated that Taylor said, “You’re not from here. You tripping, you think you look nice.” He then explained that he was a church-going individual and that both men entered the store to pay for gas. Inside, Taylor was at the counter when he allegedly attacked Hernandez again. Hernandez claimed that Byron also hit him during the incident.
At this point, Hernandez pulled out a Glock 10mm pistol from his waistband and shot both brothers. He told investigators that he felt scared, especially since Taylor was significantly taller than him. After the shooting, Hernandez called 911.
Court documents indicate that Hernandez had visible injuries to his face and reported experiencing a headache and a knot on the back of his head. He also mentioned that he takes medication for seizures. He was taken to Truman Medical Center for treatment.
Surveillance footage from inside the store showed Taylor at the cash register turning around to speak with Hernandez. At 1:13 p.m., Taylor abruptly turned and slapped Hernandez across the face while Byron stood nearby. At that moment, Hernandez pulled out his gun and began shooting. Both victims ran toward the southern edge of the store and then down the last aisle, where they fell, apparently struck by gunfire.
According to court documents, Hernandez continued to shoot both victims while they were on the ground. After ceasing the shooting, he reportedly struck Byron in the head with the gun.
Hernandez is scheduled to appear in Jackson County court on Tuesday, July 29, for a bond review hearing. This case has sparked significant attention due to the tragic loss of life and the circumstances surrounding the incident. Authorities are continuing to investigate the events leading up to the shooting to ensure all facts are fully understood.
