Not everyone at the rally shares Layla’s perspective. Nurse Sydney Simpson, who works at Kaiser, expressed deep concern over the policy change. For Simpson, the decision is not just about patients but also about her own gender-affirming care.

“I access my gender-affirming care here at Kaiser,” Simpson said. “I have a close relationship with my doctor and nurses. They are so lovely. This absolutely breaks my heart. Not just for me and my patients, but for all practitioners who I know for a fact have nothing to do with this decision.”

Simpson criticized the policy change, arguing that it is based on political pressures rather than new research or patient outcomes. She pointed to the Trump administration and the Department of Justice subpoenas as potential influences behind the decision.

Voices from Parents and Advocates

Gideon Codding, another participant in the rally, shared his experience as a parent. His daughter transitioned at the age of 11 and now regrets her choice. Codding believes that adults in positions of authority failed to provide the support and guidance needed during this critical period.

“Every person in authority has failed them when they should have pumped the breaks, assured them and said, ‘Hey, you're OK,’” he said. “Take some time, sort it out. Don’t make any rash decisions.”

Codding and others like him argue that children should be given the opportunity to grow up and explore their identities before making life-altering choices. They believe that no child is born in the wrong body and that every child deserves to grow up whole and receive proper treatment for underlying issues.
